It is time for me to step back from editing. It has been an extraordinary 16+ years. My thanks to everyone who has helped, shown kindness and shared so much during my time here. To you (as well as to those who will be happy to see me leave) I wish you well as you continue on with the Wikipedia experiment. I will probably pop back in from time to time but any posts made here will not get answered in a timely fashion. I also know that things may change down the road. Cheers to one and all and happy editing whenever possible :-) MarnetteD|Talk21:17, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I completely missed this until now. Vaya con Dios, MarnetteD, I'm really sad you're leaving, but glad you're doing what you want to do. Here's to things changing down the road. --Floquenbeam (talk) 16:40, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose: I'm going to have to open up an ANI filing. We'll see about this! I hope you'll check in on us from time to time, and that life treats you well! DonIago (talk) 18:11, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh this is really bad news. Thank you for your help, advice and support over the years. Hope to stay in touch. You will be much missed here. Very best wishes, David, David J Johnson (talk) 19:02, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
16+ years of getting paid nothing but beans is quite impressive, not many will stay for that long :) May your retirement be stress-free and full of relaxation. Thank you for all you've done here. I've learned a lot from you. Sro23 (talk) 00:50, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no! You have been one of my role models, MarnetteD. Sending you thank yous for everything I learned from your wisdom. Enjoy your retirement, may it be filled with beauty! Netherzone (talk) 02:29, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Netherzone. I had several nice editors who taught me how things worked in my time here so I am glad to have passed some of them on to you. I really appreciate your kind message. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk17:35, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Round 2
Can I just say what I said last time? "Vaya con Dios, MarnetteD, I'm really sad you're leaving, but glad you're doing what you want to do. Here's to things changing down the road." --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:18, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Goodbye
I'm sorry to see you go, but I understand your reasons. Thank you for all your kindness! It was great knowing you and I wish you the best! --A.S. Brown (talk) 00:20, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your kind words A.S. Brown. Seems I can't quite get away completely just yet but I am headed in that direction. I wisah you all the very best in return on wiki and even more so in real life. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk03:49, 11 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! Best wishes! --A.S. Brown (talk) 08:11, 11 June 2022 (UTC)
I've just seen this. I am sad to see you leave. Thank you for our wikiship, for a lack of a better word, and I wish you the best of luck with your life (: Callmemirela 🍁 talk15:35, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much Callmemirela. For the moment I still pop in once or twice a week and am delighted to see your message. Wikiship is a great word for the kind and good people like yourself that I've met over the years. Whether on wiki or in my dreams I am so fortunate to have shared time with you. Best wishes to you on wikiP and, even more so, in real life!! MarnetteD|Talk17:42, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You have a "retired" notice on this page, yet still continue to make edits. Does it mean you changed your mind and just forgot to take that down? If not and you plan on leaving, then farewell and I'll definitely miss you. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 04:12, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your note SNUGGUMS. Turns out I do drop in every couple days so I've updated my message. It is going to come to an end at some point though. Best regards!! MarnetteD|Talk04:24, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for at least keeping it blue ;) - best wishes for what you'll do elsewhere, - what you did here was precious! I'll miss conversations like that, full of music. They made me name you an honourable member of QAI, in the company of RexxS, Yoninah and others we now have to miss. - You archived my flowers of resilience with the daily stories, but please keep reading! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:58, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I believe this obituary to be Marnette (there's a copy on this site too), given what I know about his name, age and location and some personal details mentioned in the obit. Sadly he died on March 4, 2025. I used to be in regular email contact with him but haven't heard from him in a few years. I know he was going through some difficulties which led him to leaving Wikipedia but never told me what it was. I will greatly miss him and have fond memories of our discussions about films, of which he had a massive collection of about 20,000 films. RIP Marnette, I know Gerda Arendt and SchroCat and many others were fond of him too, always the consummate gentlemen, and one of the nicest people I've met on here.♦ Dr. Blofeld15:55, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Heartbreaking. MarnetteD was one of my favorite Wikipedians, kind and generous with his knowledge and humor. My thoughts are with his friends and family. Floquenbeam (talk) 16:18, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oof, losing one of the greats. MarnetteD was a joy to interact with. We worked most closely back when we were untangling the wild "Chaneyverse" (almost ten years ago now?!), which now lives at WP:HOAXLIST and turned into a kind of running gag. Thank you, to his friends and family, for sharing him with us -- both the encyclopedia and this community are better for it. — Rhododendritestalk \\ 17:22, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have missed our little chats and am so sad there will be no more of them. You were witty and kind and just wonderful all around. You are a star.-- Ponyobons mots19:12, 16 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is incredibly sad news. I remember seeing M pop up around the project several years ago and we spoke relatively often! Was a real shame to see him leave Wikipedia. He departed us far too soon. :( Patient Zerotalk01:58, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
He made a mark! Its sad that Wiki loses editors and we never know why or (and much more importantly) get the chance for the community to say sorry. Sorry Michael. Victuallers (talk) 12:20, 17 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Such a shame, I didn't interact with you much but I know that if I saw your name on an edit I could trust it was a worthwhile edit. Having just looked at your contribution history, you hadn't edited for nearly 2 years. I can't believe that time has passed so fast. Rest in peace, thanks for contributing to sharing knowledge with the world. Darkwarriorblake (talk) 21:54, 18 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sad news. I lost contact with him after he retired. Can't believe it's almost two years. He was the kind of editor we should all aspire to be. My condolences to his family. Betty Logan (talk) 09:50, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh no. MarnetteD's edits never lacked understanding or compassion. What a loss. Peace and love to his family and friends. ---Sluzzelintalk01:17, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
RIP. I've just found out about this. I'm in the same position as Darkwarriorblake. I knew his username well and had very good impressions of it but can't exactly remember where from. It's always sad to lose a great Wikipedian. Graham87 (talk) 17:18, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. A deep loss. I missed their retirement notice, as I was taking an extended wikibreak at the time. Can't believe I missed Dr. B's posting a couple of weeks ago. It's a testament to MarnetteD that so many long-term, incredible editors have continued to watch their talkpage, and are leaving their comments here. I think it's indicative of him to be called "one of the greats" by another one. Vaya con Dios.Onel5969TT me17:37, 25 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am running Wikipedia:The World Destubathon next month, and have named a $100 prize after him, the Marnette D. Memorial Award for Film, TV, Theatre and Literature. If anybody wants to destub or improve a few articles from those fields as part of it you'd be very welcome. The idea would be to use it to buy a book or two to further contribute!♦ Dr. Blofeld20:58, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that obit is definitely him, as he let his full name be known to his email correspondents. I am greatly distressed by his passing, but after the deaths of his parents and his only sibling, he went downhill steadily. I will greatly miss him -- he was one of the few people I shared all my enthusiasms and new readings or viewings with; we discussed films, television, theatre, actors, directors, singers, opera, dance, conductors, books, and everything related to those. It was a pleasure knowing him. God bless you, Michael! Softlavender (talk) 01:29, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is a very painful loss, and I will dearly miss MarnetteD. We worked together on Bob Hoskins at times and I wish we could've had more chances to collaborate before seeing the above obituary. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 17:19, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
We didn't work together much, MarnetteD, but I admired your work and was surprised to see your name posted on the list of Deceased Wikipedians. You made so many contributions to the project and you will be missed. Peace to you and your family. LizRead!Talk!21:38, 4 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my goodness, no. I miss the discussions that we had before you retired, some discussions about references, amongst other editing habits. Quite frankly, you motivated me to find a way to do more edits as possible in the most productive manner possible. Thank you for all the conversations we had while you were here. Hearing of your passing was a complete surprise to me, and you shall be missed. Steel1943 (talk) 00:04, 12 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
