Hi Starkiryu64. This is my talk page rather than a sandbox. All I did was archive it as it was getting kinda long. It is something that some editors (though not all) do from time to time. There are several reasons for doing so. The main one for me is so that I don't have to scroll past a lot of old threads to get to the most recent ones. My fingers (like the rest of me) are getting older and they get achy when I have to use the scroll function on my mouse too much :-) I hope you are well and please enjoy the rest of your week! MarnetteD|Talk05:31, 25 February 2021 (UTC)
You are welcome LindsayH. There are so many policy and guideline pages around here and new ones are being created all the time :-) I hope you have a pleasant week. MarnetteD|Talk20:57, 28 February 2021 (UTC)
Thank you very much Gerda Arendt. A special and beautiful post for several reasons. Carmen was the second opera I saw live back in 1975. Isabel Leonard has been eagerly anticipating singing the role. Sadly her planned performance with the Houston Opera last year was cancelled due to the pandemic. Thanks again. MarnetteD|Talk17:14, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
Well I'm a whole day behind on my thanks Gerta. Looks like a fascinating production of Carmen. I may have left this link for you to enjoy before but it is always worth another look. Both of these make me wish I was located in Europe so I could hop on a train and be in the audience for these remarkable performances. Toi toi toi. MarnetteD|Talk16:40, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
No, this one seems new - and rather not to be forgotten! Thank you! - As it happens, I just nominated Template:Did you know nominations/Elsa Dreisig another young singer, article translated by LouisAlain, I go over it - and then discover that I heard her in the Rameau, Simon Rattle conducting. - No live performances though, you can stay put. Carmen was last year, just before everything closed. I heard her in the livestream of Manon just now, but my bell again didn't ring when I saw the name. Nice reflections on YouTube (bottom of her article), on the Violet Snow. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:52, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
Just got back from watching a few of Elsa's performances Gerda. What a treat. Best wishes to her as her career continues. From what I can tell that Cenerentola was the last opera that Isabel got to perform in before things shut down. I had tickets for her concert with the Romeros at the Lensic Theater next month but the expected cancellation announcement arrived yesterday :-( Good luck on the DYK. MarnetteD|Talk20:31, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
I expect no problems with the DYK, - excellent sources for a change. On IWD next week, I'll have a singer in each set. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:40, 4 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks so much Gerta. I'm listening to and enjoying it as I type. I sure am glad the internet is around so I can find performances of the music you recommend right away rather than having to find it on disk or tape at the store :-) Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk16:51, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Beautiful and timely Gerta. A nice tribute to Yoninah. Stretching back over a decade now I am deeply affected by the passing of these editors who I never met yet am humbled, honored and proud to have worked with them. Have a nice week. MarnetteD|Talk22:17, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
Yes, anyone – even you – could have added that title. I noted the problem. You removed the template note, and you declined to fix it. Maybe next time you'll choose a different course. I've fixed it; something you could have done too. Cheers. 7&6=thirteen (☎)00:55, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
You did not "note the problem" that was on that page 7&6=thirteen. You asked for a bare url to be formatted and that was not a bare url. The reference was in a cite template. I hope you are aware of the difference. If you want something like that fixed and you don't want to do it yourself please try using the correct template. Wikipedia:WikiProject Citation cleanup has instructions and a list of the templates that you will want to use in the future. Maybe next time you will choose a different course and use one of those. MarnetteD|Talk02:19, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
It wasn't an insult, for God's sake. I was not throwing stones, and you should not either. Fixing the problem is a preferred course for me; and if not for you, than so be it. I apologize, and will desist from further interaction with you. 7&6=thirteen (☎)04:35, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
It certainly reads like one 7&6=thirteen. As I replied in the same manner that your post presented I must not have throw any stones either. First, if fixing the problem truly was your preferred course then you would have added the title yourself. Next, I try and help to fix problems all the time with varying degrees of success. Claiming that working on them "is not the course for me" is another stone that you probably think you didn't throw. The statement is out of line if you take the time to examine my nearly 16 years of editing. Next, the problem on that page was that you used a template that had nothing to do with the problem that was there. I now understand that you were not aware of that. Hopefully this will help you to learn the difference and use the correct template to help other editors in the future. I have had good interactions with you in the past and would be happy for any more to occur in the future. But, if future interaction is to be avoided I certainly understand and will abide by your wishes except in any situation where it is required by policy. MarnetteD|Talk05:24, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
Your edit summary said I could have fixed it; that was mutually true. That I replied in kind was not a WP:Personal attack, no more than was your edit summary. When I put up a bare url template, it usually merely prompts someone to cure it using "Filled in 1 bare reference(s) with reFill". That didn't happen; and you removed the template. Anyway, no insult was intended.
I used the 'wrong template' as you say.
I've been here over thirteen years, and except for someone deliberately and tenaciously being nonhelpful at ARS, which I characterized as repeated disruptive trollish behavior (and it is IMO), have never had a a problem. I now understand that they get to come in and make accusations about canvassing or commenting at the ARS listing of a particular article as to reasons why it should not be improved (they do get to do that at the AFD discussions for sure), as much as they want, and I should not say anything. 'Let trolls be trolls' and don't say anything. ANI has spoken: "ARS is not a walled garden."
These disrupters do not subscribe to the purpose of ARS. Since the behavior speaks for itself, and I've been warned, in the future I will let it go without comment or interaction.
Saying that the article at an AFD should be preserved because of its content or because it meets various standards is not a "personal insult." But any of my participation at AFD will be subject to scrutiny. This line of conversation reinforces that concern.
Your bringing up the ANI was connecting unrelated dots. That you invoked alleged violations and possible further sanctions is chilling on further conversation. You get to do that too. I thought it was an unwarranted low blow, but I will take it into account.
Apparently I am now wearing a scarlet letter and a target, and should watch what I say all the time, as my motives are now in question. That is your view, and I am saddened by that. I'll keep it in mind.
Thus endeth the lesson for me.
Happy editing. 10:53, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
I am sorry to read about your problems in other areas 7&6=thirteen. I need to point out that I have not mentioned ANI at all in this thread. I am not aware of all that you have been through. Hang in there if you can. I know you are a good editor and have the best interests of the project at heart. Most important is for you to take care of yourself both here and in real life. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk20:32, 6 March 2021 (UTC)
I was cutting down on my editing anyway. I should cut down on it more. It is addictive and in the end nobody cares anyway. But that is the Wikipedia way. Real life intrudes — needs more of my attention, not less.
This month the articles for cleanup have a bunch that have a reason of changing long comma-ed lists to bulleted. I started out doing them (I can do it semi-mechanically by pasting into a text editor and doing a replace and make them multi-column) but as I do more of them I wonder if it is really an improvement. Have you seen these? Do you have an opinion on changing them? RJFJR (talk) 01:52, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi RJFJR. Can you give me an example or two? I've been going through your recent edits but you so much (excellent) work that I'm having trouble finding something to see to where I can answer your question. Ahead of that, and to get more input than just mine, you should think about asking at a village pump. I'm not sure which one would be best but the WP:VPIL or the WP:VPM would be a place to start. Cheers to ya. MarnetteD|Talk02:24, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks RJFJR. The bulleted lists are a definite improvement. As to the column situation that can be tricky and opinions will differ between editors. For me a list of less then ten items only needs one column. After that I'm okay with two columns but I would hold off using three or four columns until you get lists that are 50 items and over. For my eye the more columns that get used the more the info gets a bit too smooshed together and, thus, harder to read. Now this is all just my opinion and the VP's I mentioned above would be a good place to get answers if you have more questions. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk23:57, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
Template talk:Infobox person
I have just made my point here. There is absolutely no consensus there for your changes, and even if there was, you would need a RFC to change literally thousands of articles, including numerous FAs. GiantSnowman17:40, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
The documentation is quite clear as is current WP:CONSENSUS. If you have to read the same name over and over again at the top of the article then that is the way it goes. BTW restoring fields that no longer show in the infobox indicated that you aren't paying attention to what you are doing. MarnetteD|Talk17:46, 10 March 2021 (UTC)
First of all, Thank you for all the tireless contribution of cleaning bare URLs.
Since the day you suggested not using a bare URL tag inside MI, I had taken utmost care of not doing so. But the gadget Twinkle has a bug that automatically groups the tag into MI sometimes. I had reported the bug on Twinkle's talk page here. Please bear till the bug gets resolved.
Hello Ninney. I appreciate your efforts in this. I know it creates more work for you to make sure the tag is outside the MI. It is more work for me if it is inside so it just a trade off who has to do the extra clicking with the mouse :-) Thanks for reporting it at twinkle - there has been a discussion or two about this before but no changes were made. Those were a year or two ago so things might be different this time - we can always hope. Thanks again and cheers. MarnetteD|Talk02:40, 18 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi Davidgoodheart. I'm afraid I know nothing about the subject. I was just formatting bare urls. My apologies for not being of help. Thank you a ton for your editing on that list and for everything else you do here at the 'pedia. I hope you have a nice week! MarnetteD|Talk02:44, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi RJFJR. Yep reflinks is down - since Saturday. I posted about it here Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Can anyone find out what is going on?. Since it is being maintained in parts unknown there is no way to find out what is going on or when it might be fixed. I'm trying it a couple times a day to see if it is working. Add to that the fact that refill2 went down several hours ago and we are 95% sunk. I've been using citer on articles with just a few bare urls but that is labor intensive since it only fixes one ref at a time. Fingers crossed that things return to normal soon. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk04:04, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
Thank you
CJDOS has given you a cookie for fixing bare URLs.
Thank you, MarnetteD, for your help fixing bare URLs when I have been busy with non-Wikipedia tasks.
In reference to the most recent article I tagged for bare URLs, Crimea, I was glancing for information when I came across [2] and [3] display tags that weren't superscript; mouseovering the refs confirmed these as bare URLs. I didn't notice the [1] display tag until after you had removed the template; curiously, when I mouseovered this one, it displayed as a bare URL, but I can't find any evidence of this in the article's revision history. In retrospect, I had multiple display tabs open, and likely meant the PDF bare URL [49] presently in § Ukrainian Republic (de jure since 1991, de facto 1991–2014) (the TOC section was highlighted in my browser); I will fix this one myself. You caught the bare URL in § Russian Federation (de facto since 2014), which I had missed. Thank you for making things right. — Christopher, Sheridan, OR (talk) 11:02, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for the yummy cookie Christopher, Sheridan, OR. Both refill2 and reflinks are down so in an article that big it is hard to find the bare urls no matter how many times I comb through the reference section. Your edit summary helped me track them down. Cheers and enjoy the rest of your week. MarnetteD|Talk14:51, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Bare URLs
My apologies for leaving so many of these tags. For some bizarre reason neither Refill or Reflinks is working for me right now. Reflinks has been down for a few days, and refill stopped working yesterday. Onel5969TT me14:49, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
No worries Onel5969. reflinks has been down since Friday and refill2 went down a couple days later. Sadly, there seems to be no way to find out what is going on as they aren't being maintained by anyone at wikipedia :-( I'm soldiering on using citer but, since it only fixes one at a time, it is a labor intensive task and I'm getting a titch burned out. Hopefully they will get fixed soon and then we can zap the backlog. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk14:57, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Hello Starkiryu64. It is nice to hear from you again :-) I am not familiar with this genre though, as I read the article, I may have heard examples of it without being aware that they were specifically from this genre. I will search out some of the songs later today - being able to find music like this on the internet is a marvelous thing. Best wishes to you. MarnetteD|Talk16:46, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi again Starkiryu64. I am enjoying working my way through the music of several of the artists listed here List of city pop artists. I particularly like Toshiki Kadomatsu especially "Love Junky" This compilation let me get several songs at one go. The music took me right back to the 1980's and brought back some nice memories. Thank you for making me aware of this genre. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk16:57, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
So, how do you feel about city pop, M? To me, it was giving me a good vibe and a reminder about that summer is coming, I wish that I had a Walkman to hear the music around me. Starkiryu64 (talk) 00:30, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
I really like it S and I am grateful that you made me aware of it. Your description of the vibe it gave you is also wonderful and better than anything I could write. Thank you so very much. MarnetteD|Talk02:36, 28 March 2021 (UTC)
Hiya S. I wanted to let you know that two of my friends liked the genre and wanted me to pass on their thanks. One other friend wasn't as excited by the music but she isn't a fan of the 1980s in general. My thanks again for sharing this and I hope you have a nice Friday and a wonderful weekend. MarnetteD|Talk01:34, 2 April 2021 (UTC)
Hello Ninney. I am not sure what you are asking. The references you list are in cite templates. If you feel they are incorrect or need changing then that is a task you will have to take on yourself. All I am doing is using the tools available to move bare urls into cite templates. BTW two of the three tools that do that work are down and the third one can only do one reference at a time. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk22:55, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
They are NOT IN cite templates & hence I marked them with the tag which you removed saying rmv as there are no bare urls. If you want I will mark them again with Tag. Thank You! -Ninney (talk) 23:02, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
Ninney here is one of the ones that you list <ref>[http://www.theutenberg.se/pdf/the_holy_see_the_order_of_malta_and_international_law.pdf The Holy See, the Order of Malta and International Law], Bo J. Theutenberg, {{ISBN|91-974235-6-4}}</ref>. This one (and the others) meet the criteria at WP:CITE and fall under the classification of "manually formatted." They have the info needed to search in a web archive should they go dead. There are times when they will even have have more info then they will if formatted by refill or reflinks. If you want them in a cite template you will have to do that yourself. MarnetteD|Talk23:08, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
Yep RJFJR. I think there is another country or two that it is working as well. That just makes the whole thing more frustrating. I am trying to think where we might make more people aware of the problem. Maybe a mention in the Signpost would get editors involved than the talk page thread or the VPT. They certainly need to explore fixing the current tools or making new ones if they want to prevent linkrot. Cheers and enjoy your week. MarnetteD|Talk03:48, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks RJFJR. It started yesterday thankfully. Reflinks was gone for a year or more and then we got it back for what - four or five weeks? Since it makes formatting PDFs so much easier (as well as tagging many dead links) I would love to have it going again but I'm not holding out much hope. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk19:06, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
Yes I know about it Starkiryu64. My parents were Lutheran and we attended church from when my sister and I were very young. I don't celebrate it the same way now but I do honor the spirit of renewal that is a part of the season. MarnetteD|Talk05:13, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for all of these links GA. The pic is beautiful. I note that one of Olena's signature roles is Rusalka. I've always though my beloved Santa Fe Opera was a perfect place for that opera. They finally schedule it and, just my luck, the pandemic cancels the entire season. Oh well the links you leave help make up for what I missed. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk21:45, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
Hello, MarnetteD, I'm a representative of Nate Morris, working to collaborate with the community to improve the encyclopedia's entry. I am looking for volunteers willing to help by weighing-in and implementing changes to the article, so I can stay hands-off and respectful of the rules in place for my COI. I stumbled upon your name as a recent editor to the page in September. As such, I wondered if you'd be interested to take a look at my open request at Talk:Nate Morris. Thanks for any consideration. All the best, MS rep 4 NMorris (talk) 11:03, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
That tells me virtually nothing. When you remove large chucks of an article it would be a good idea to explain in the edit summary why that has occurred. CE does not really cover it. MarnetteD|Talk07:07, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Thank you Victuallers. The hard creative work was done by Willthacheerleader18. I was happy to help with formatting the bare urls. I was fortunate enough to visit Scotland but it was many (many) years ago. I was glad to get to enjoy it again vicariously through the Men In Kilts series on Starz. Best regards. MarnetteD|Talk17:11, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
I must look at that. I moved to Scotland 3 years ago to enjoy the countryside and to join fellow brexit resistors! Important to mention the people who "just" do some tidying. They add the quality to our creations. best Victuallers (talk) 17:19, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
Of the many fond memories of my time there Victuallers I'll share one. I backpacked along the east shore of Loch Ness and stayed two nights at a cute little hotel in Foyers. I arrived on the day of a fishing derby and the pub was full of the locals. They bought the Yank who was on holiday several pints all of them delicious :-) Thanks again and cheers! Washington Post access
On White people you asked about my access to Washington Post - I just clicked on the link. I've got no subscription, but the intro page says that without subscription you can read a limited number of articles per month. I accepted their cookies, and since I visit them only every few weeks, I suppose that my access to the article was included in that limited number. Hope this helps. --Rsk6400 (talk) 12:18, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the info [[User:|Rsk6400]] I did not read that so I will see if I can get there and format the ref. Regards. MarnetteD|Talk20:04, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
"A variation of this method, BRI (block, revert, ignore), should be employed against edit-warring vandals." Not sure how much denying there is in immortalising trolls in a big chunk of the page history. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 08:32, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
I have no idea what you are on about. Revert means revert and that is what I did. BTW the order is 1)Revert 2)Block and 3)Ignore, Furthermore it states "Revert the vandalism on the page, so it appears in its pre-vandalised state" and there is no wording regarding any limitation of the number of times that the reverting should occur. I followed the instructions for number two and three as well. I have done this for over sixteen years and will continue to do so in the future. MarnetteD|Talk08:42, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
I have just quoted you the part of the page you are referring to, and it clearly states when this order may not be optimal. There might not be any limitation of the number of times that the reverting should occur, but the condition of "edit-warring vandals" already applies in such situations. 𝟙𝟤𝟯𝟺𝐪𝑤𝒆𝓇𝟷𝟮𝟥𝟜𝓺𝔴𝕖𝖗𝟰 (𝗍𝗮𝘭𝙠) 08:48, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
Most likely AeschyIus. I do know that whoever it is has been at this for several weeks. I've left several of the recent IPs at my AIV report. Thanks for your help. MarnetteD|Talk03:51, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
Hello Bangabandhu. That article showed up in the Category:Pages using infobox person with unknown parameters under the letter N which means either the "nationality" field or the "notable works" one was causing the problem. Removal got the page out of the cat. I am trying something else to see if a different fix will work. And after a lot of tinkering I tracked down that the problem was with the "name" field. I am learning the ins and outs of dealing with these fields as I go so I appreciate you bringing this page to my attention. Cheers and enjoy your weekend. MarnetteD|Talk15:48, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
If you find a page in such a cat, edit section 0 (assuming that's where the infobox is) and without making any changes, preview it. You'll get red error messages like
Warning: Page using Template:Infobox person with unknown parameter "name " (this message is shown only in preview).
so it's a parameter with the word name in it. This is not a param that is actually named |name=, I can tell this because of the long gap between the word name and the following double quote. That gap contains non-breaking spaces, which the MediaWiki parser is assuming are part of the param name. The fix is to delete all spaces between the word name and the equals sign, then if you want to space it out again, use plain spaces. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 19:32, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
