Hello, MGA73,

Recently, you have PROD'd some files with an argument that they didn't need to be kept "local"as there were similar or identical images on the Commons. While I believe this is a valid justification, I and other admins are now deleting these files 7 days later and I can't help but notice that these local files were not replaced by the images on the Commons. For example, several of the files are/were on Butler matrixY but they were not substituted with files from the Commons so the images are just gone and not replaced. Can you take care of this for all of the files deleted for being local that you tagged for Proposed deletion? You can replace the images when you tag the files, not only after thy have been deleted. @Liz:! I try to be very careful not to tag files unless they are on Commons and I also try to make sure to replace usage if the file have a different name on Commons. But mistakes can of course happen. However, I checked Butler matrix and I do not see the problem. If I restore the version before you commented out the files it looks fine to me. I wonder if there is some time lag before the page update (so a purge or a null edit is needed). Could you check if you still see a problem? --MGA73 (talk) 18:53, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz:! I noticed that you commented out a few more files. This is really strange because when I look at the old version (and remove the out comment) the files work fine. I think this is just a time lag. If it happens again perhaps you could try to make a null edit or purge the page before you comment out the files? --MGA73 (talk) 20:56, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just checking back. I could stop removing the links. This happens almost automatically when using Twinkle or XFDcloser to delete files and articles.

Also, the word for someone who has died is "deceased" not "deseased". Small difference but when I'm seeing "deseased", I think it says "diseased" which is not the right word. Liz ^{Read! Talk!} 17:43, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to work fine as long as I don't do the "unlinking file" process after deleting the PROD'd file from the English Wikipedia. Only problem would be if there are different names for the file on Wikipedia and the Commons. But the files I checked worked fine. Liz ^{Read! Talk!} 18:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Liz:! Thank you for returning. I will fix the spelling in future PROD's.

Great that it works. If the file name is different I will update the articles with the name on Commons. At least if I do not get disturbed and forget to do so. But the names are almost always the same. The problem is that a bot removes the {{NowCommons}} if there is a {{Keep local}} and the NowCommons would warn that the name is different but the Keep Local does not warn. --MGA73 (talk) 19:43, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MGA73, Is there any means of checking that none of Spinningspark's work has been hidden in the process of deleting locally-held image files? I have searched Liz's contributions and reverted 17 edits, but Spinningspark uploaded 613 images, some of which are used in more than one article. Is there any means of verifying that references to these images have not been removed (by users other than Liz)? This seems to be just the sort of difficulty that made Spinningspark reluctant to use Commons in the first place. Thanks catslash (talk) 14:17, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Catslash: Hi! Thank you for fixing that. I do not think that we can blame Commons for what users do on enwiki but never mind that because your question is more relevant. I thought it would show up on User:Spinningspark/Images created if someone were commenting out use of his files. But since that is not the case I will see if it is possible to search edit history for text like "Commenting out use(s) of file". --MGA73 (talk) 14:43, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Catslash: Yes he did a very good job! If files are transferred badly to Commons there is a much higher risk they get deleted so I check and fix before I PROD. But I did not expect admins to comment out the files.
