Hello,

Could you please restore File:Pacman-puckman.jpg. It was speedy deleted via criterion F8 (now on Commons), but I nominated the image for deletion at Commons on the grounds that it is non-free, and the image was accordingly deleted at Commons. I think this image could definitely be used in Pac-Man under WP:NFCC, and I would appreciate its restoration, seeing as the image is no longer available on Commons. I asked twice usurpation of the username Micki on da.wiki without success. I am active globally and from time to time I come to your wiki and edit as an IP (it is not convenient to me to log out and log in with different name, although I made ​​the account Micki (temp) when I asked usurpation last time). Hi

I have taken many photos in our provincial nature reserves, and would like to add these to Wikipedia. I have contacted the organisation that manages these reserves to find out their policy on photos taken in the reserves. Here are some comments:

"The person was asking if they could post photographs taken in one of our reserves and post it on the Wikipedia website (not EKZNW's website). Section 6.1 seems to say that they can."

"Its fine if they are posting the photos not for financial gain. I am not familiar with Wikipedia Website. It would be nice if they acknowledge us though this is my view and not the policy."

"It would appear we don't have a policy in this regard but that its fine provided there is no financial gain, which in this instance there would not be."

If THEY (or someone else) have takes the photos and allows you to use it for non commercial purposes then we can not use the photos. Even if Wikipedia does not have a financial gain all photos must be free for commercial use.

If YOU have taken the photos and they are not derivative vorks then I would say that you can upload them to Wikipedia and use whatever license you prefer. It has been desided that it does not matter to Wikipedia or Commons what "house rules" say. So it is up to you if you want to respect their wish or not. --MGA73 (talk) 12:31, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

There are probably not so many files. You could also just put them on a list (directly posted to Category talk:Unclassified Chemical Structures or linked there).

Define “usable files”. ;-) The non-orphaned files and the ones not tagged with {{Should be SVG|chemical}} or {{Low quality chem}} can probably be moved. Hi there. Your bot has been adding files to Category:Wikipedia license migration needs review, a category that I just spent a month clearing (with the understanding that it would not be repopulated). At this point, every file that that your bot tags is one that will have had the GFDL tag added recently, i.e. after the relicense cutoff point. That means that the files are either new, or are being re-licensed long after being uploaded. Do you think that the bot needs to continue to run this task? Yes sadly the migration project is a long lasting project. I have been working on it for years now and I think I have fixed more than 600.000 files worldwide. I'm very happy that you helped me out here on en-wiki :-D

Most of the files are not eligible for a relicense and my bot should mark most of them as "not-eligible". However in a few cases humans should check. For example if a file uploaded years ago and the license is changed or if an old file is copied from another Wikipedia project. Take this File:1898-O SD.jpg as an example.

If you check the bots edits you will notice that there are not many files uploaded with GFDL. Free files should be uploaded to Commons and GFDL should be avoided. If you check MediaWiki:Licenses/en-ownwork you can see that GFDL is not an option you can choose as the only license. --MGA73 (talk) 18:01, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

I see that your bot has added {{Now Commons}} to this image quite a few times. Are you using Regex to check for the template? You might have to modify it to take the extra parameter for this template which few people has added. --Sreejith K (talk) 17:56, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

I was using tag_nowcommons.py and it seems that the script does not (yet) know it should skip files with a keep local template. Once it works you can just start the script and let it do the rest. --MGA73 (talk) 19:19, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

I do agree with you. Since the person died in 1931 obviously this photo might have been published in India before 1951. I have replaced the old tag of licencing with new {{PD-India}} on its file description page to which please see.

I created a tool to orphan the redirects you listed on your sandbox. It's currently semi-automated (requires human input via command line), but should be very easy to automate. I'm not aware of a rule that says we can only delete or nominate xx copyvios for deletion each day. If there is a problem with a photo it is important to get it deleted or tagged as possibly unfree. I also think it is better to have similar files nominated the same day - that will make it possible for users to comment more files with similar copyright status fast (copy paste). --MGA73 (talk) 21:10, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

I agree. But the proof that it is free should have been provided when the files was uploaded. There is no rule saying that a PUF must be closed after 7 days. It could be kept open for longer if needed. If you tell users that they can't tag all the files as (possibly) unfree there is a risk that we forget the files and they are wrongly used a few years more. --MGA73 (talk) 21:30, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Probably a good idea, I created Category:Non-free images of currency and updated the template. Most of my .png maps are obsolete, mostly because other users have replaced them by .svgs. I have listed at User:Keith Edkins/ObsoleteMaps all those which are apparently no longer used - if these could be double checked for usage and then deleted, I can then source the ones that are left and you move them to Commons.--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 21:58, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

This is in reference to your request for tagging my recently uploaded image - File:Franz Kafka young.jpg. I am new to wikipedia (as far as my activity is concerned) and I do not know how to add copyright tag to this particular one. I went through all the tags in the wiki pages but I couldn't find the one I should use. I downloaded this image from a website which I have already mentioned in the image description. Again, I'd like to recommend my NowCommons script, which is at tools:~magog/commons_images.htm. I will have it updated in about 3 minutes. The reason I edited that was that the template recognises that the category does not exist, and puts the image page in a category for resoling. Helpful Pixie Bot is then trying to work out what date "2012 keep local" corresponds to every time it checks that category. If it was a real month in the last few years Femto Bot would create the category, so the problem would resolve itself. Rich Farmbrough, 11:54, 29 February 2012 (UTC).

Thanks for taking a second look. The one that seemed most concerning of the few you noted concerns about is now deleted, and I can see where you come from on the others. Some files on Nepali Wikipedia still have no license information i.e.this is the one of them, which has no description, source, author, date etc. And under licensing the up-loader has stated that he/she is copy right holder and give the permission to publish that. please suggest me here -Bhawani (talk) 14:52, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I have contacted the uploader of non-free orphaned images. I have not been allowed to immediately propose deletion without a mentor's approval. Begoon is busy, and Fastily is on the long Wikibreak. This image is used in Katie Peretti article. However, I asked in WP:MCQ, and Stefan2 said that use of this image fails to meet WP:NFCC#8 and WP:NFCC#3a. I contacted casanova88, who added this image to that, about this, although the user is not an uploader. Nevertheless, the user made no response to that. I mostly work on free files and not on non-free files. But the reason I suggested a FFD instead of a {{di-disputed fair use rationale}} in this case is that I would expect some users to think that the file could be used as fair use. I've been reading around but the policy on images seems to have been tightened since 2005 so I'm not clear which bit is applicable. From reading your user page you appear to have some expertise on this so could you clarify why you think it is "unfree"? Also, just to clarify: The photo displays the floor of my flat and a collection of manga books spread out in sequence. Obviously the covers are partially visible (wholly in one case), but I'm not sure that this constitutes copyright infringement. I think that removing images could be ok if he shows good judgement. But I think that he should inform uploaders and tag the file if it gets orphan. Talking to him won't help so the choise is to do nothing at the moment or report him somewhere. I suggest that you think twice before you report him because he will most likely be upset and "make some noise". Due to illness in my family I do not have to check his edits or help you at the moment so I suggest that you wait a week or two. If another mentor has time you should ask him/her before doing more. Interessting question. I'm not much into the non-free files so I do not know how strict it is taken. Do you know if there have been a discussion somewhere about using screenshots in single episodes of series? It may be ok to use Getty Images but it seems that replacements has been found and whenever possible we should use photos that are not used commercially (Wikipedia:NFCC#2). I'm nominating this image for deletion because it is shown in Getty Images. Although it is made by NBC, the fact that this photo is licensed to Getty Images indicates a higher commercial value of this image, and higher commercial value would triumph any other intent in Wikipedia. You contacted me about helping with some copyright questions. As is true with most image copyright questions, the average Wikipedia contributor could not possibly know the publication history, name of creator, death date of creator, etc., of photos he or she uploads, and can only go with the apparent date of the photos and the substance of the relevant public domain tag that Wikipedia has available. PD-Italy applies to the photos you are asking about because they were created in Italy prior to 1976, per the PD-Italy tag. That tag also says, though, that PD-Italy photos on en.wikipedia may not be transferrable to Commons, because they may not be in the public domain outside of Italy and the United States and therefore cannot be listed as such on Commons. (Which is why I never put anything on Commons, because knowing what can and cannot be there is far too complicated and the necessary evidence is virtually impossible to discover.) I think that some of the photos you transferred to Commons should not have been and need to left on en.wikipedia to keep the photo police from squawking about them and to keep them available on en.wikipedia as I intended.

As for the link to the source for the Macchi M.70 line drawings, it still works fine for me, so I don't know why anyone is having trouble finding it. It is always best not to remove a tag yourself. The reason I did not move it to Commons myself was that I was not using my own computer. Someone has now moved it to Commons and I deleted the local file so everything should be ok. Files on Wikipedia are not only used on Wikipedia. They can be used in blogs etc (search with Google) and they can be used in books (impossible to find). So if you rename a file and delete the redirect you break the link.

and

• File:Oregon 2008 Measure 51.svg

The maps are identical but illustrate different things. Do you think that it would be reasonable to merge them (by e.g. moving them to Commons as "File:Oregon 2006 Measure 46 and 48.svg"), or would it be better to keep them separate? I also have another question. I noticed that some files have a {{nocommons}} added with a comment something like "Commons image is a copyvio of this one, but Commons administrators won't delete copyvios of GFDL images". So Ifixed attribution on Commons and deleted the file on en-wiki. But how are we going to find other files like that? Files with this template are all in one big category and often there is no reason added on the file page so we have to read edit summary. I think that it would be better to adjust the F8 criterion to allow deletion of most {{keep local}} files in the same way as other files. The category is currently very messy and probably hides many copyright violations. Very annoying. As for Gvnayr, I'd say check each one individually. Some are okay since it's the only image in an article or the only screenshot, but in some cases he has 2-3 for the same game, and the excess can of course be scrapped.
