I previously removed the linking at Athletics at the 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's team cross country to all articles we do not currently have since it had been determined that competitors at the Olympic games are not default notable, so there is no reason to supposed we would automatically create these articles on people who are not clearly notable. An editor came along and reverted these edits with the explanation "keep links red". I really do not think we should have such links, it gives the false impression that Olympic competitors are default notable, and lots of redlinks in some cases lead to false links. I do not want to get in an edit war, so I am just letting you know. I do not think this massive amount of red links on people we are unlikely to ever have articles on is useful.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:20, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That editor is Habst. He and Beanie regularly go around and return to being present redlinks. Beanie claims that since "most olympians are notable" having a redlink is acceptable. These two editors are trying to avoid the implications of the consensus that Olympic competitors are notable and continue to make Wikipedia give the impression they are notable by making sure that there are links to the names of every olympic competitor. Since they do it in tandem one editor has no change to stop them, and they tend not to listen to other people.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:40, 1 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You are nominating articles at the appropriate rate to deal with the massive backlog of P&G failing stub sportsbio articles. Particularly bundling articles created by the same editor in the same period with substantially the same information and sourcing in every article is an appropriate response. People keep saying things like "participation in the 2012 olympics satisfies the sports notability guidelines". This is 100% false. It was decided in 2021 that the only olympians who satisfy notability guidelines for that alone were medal winners, not all participants. In 2022 we scrapped all participation inclusion guidelines. As can be seen here [[Athletics at the 2024 Summer Olympics – Men's 4 × 400 metres relay]] a user is mass restoring relinks to Olympic competitors. We have in 2021 agreed that only medalists in the Olympics were default notable for such and in 2022 we agreed to remove all default notable assumptions for all athletic participation. There is no reason to supsect that all Olympic competitors will be notable. Thus we should not have massive amounts of redlinks. This leads to false positive links. There is no reason we should preserve redlinks, especially when they were massively created on the assumption that all Olympic competitors were notable. This to me is an attempt to still impose pre-2021 rules which makes no sense. I do not want to get into an edit war, but this editor seems to be insistent on reverting such edits. I have tried to explain to him that olympic competitors are no longer considered default notable, but he just ignores me and insists on restoring the redirects.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:47, 28 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

They were restored. I explained in detail that since olympic competitors are no longer considered no longer default notable, we should not have redlinks to biographical articles on them. Since Olympic competitors are not default notable I have started to remove some of the redlinks. Habst and Beanie come along behind and leave arguments like "most Olympic competitors are notable, redlinks are acceptable", totally ignoring the multiple times consensus has determined that Olympic competitors are not default notable just for competing. Since they are not default notable just for competing, I do not think we should presume to create redlinks to their names in lists. This creates the misleading impression that Olympic competitors are default notable, when in fact they are not.John Pack Lambert (talk) 20:43, 1 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
