According to Lowenthal, the Ferromonte Railroad was never part of the CNJ High Bridge, it was always an independent line. I added it, but it is pretty small, which is why I originally left it out. On the schematic map, it doesn't belong, since it wasn't part of the CNJ system, and the schematic map is intended to only show the CNJ system. JimIrwin 17:20, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jim, you've made the best population maps I've ever seen. We also want to look at the population densities across different states. We've tried to use your individual state maps and join them together, but it proved to be difficult due to the different map ratio, orientation and so on. I wonder if you have population maps for big regions, such northeast and southeast US? Thanks! Yes, each state is a different projection, so they won't tile together. The only large scale map I have is the entire U.S., so there aren't any regional maps. I'll take a look at the data I have to see how hard it would be to make some regional maps.

The US Population map was originally on Wikipedia, but someone moved it to Commons. You can find it here. All my Wikipedia population maps are licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License, which means that you may modify them, but you must make your modified versions freely available under the same license.

The image Oregon population map.png is a candidate to be copied to the Wikimedia Commons. When you uploaded this image, you licensed it for use under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). File:Minnesota population mao.png is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:Minnesota population map.png. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. I agree with your standards of inclusion. If there aren't some, everyone just ends up inserting various and sundry non-notable folks. I'm wondering if you know how far this initially extended. A 1912 map shows unused right-of-way from the end of tracks at Hamburg Placs (on plate 51) up to Raymond Boulevard (on plate 54), but it also shows an unused bridge over the CNJ's Newark and New York Railroad. --NE2 15:55, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I found somewhat conflicting information. It was intended to be 3.1 miles, all the way to the Passaic (Annual statements of the railroad and canal companies of the state of New Jersey, 1890, p. 145). One source said that it was actually 1.04 miles, e.g. to Hamburg Place. Another source says that the Newark and Passaic branch extended from Oak Island yard to the center line of Plank road, but was operated only to Hamburg place. That source was "Documents of the Legislature of the State of New Jersey, 1920". Since I cannot imagine that another railroad was incorporated to extend it and then was left idle beyond Hamburg place, I assume that the Newark and Passaic was actually built to Plank road (i.e. to the Morris Canal), making it 3.4 miles, and then later used only to the coal yards at Hamburg Place.

But, I'm also wondering, can we:

• just use the top half, unless we can in the future add a sourced discussion of the M&D canal as a competitor?, and

• try to make the canal route stand out more (as it is, it's hard to distinguish the blue from the generally cool colors the map uses) and make the text larger so it's obvious what the canal is at the current resolution? I wish there were a way to use one image as a thumbnail and have it link to a larger more detailed image. Are you asking for the canal route to be more obvious on the thumbnail, or on the full image? The full image is best viewed at 1000px, by the way. Unfortunately, Wikipedia resizes everything to a rather small size on the media page, and its not always possible to produce a good, complete map at that small size. That is also a disadvantage of using SVG rather than a raster image, because although Wikipedia shrinks images to be approximately 500px, at least when you click on a raster image to get the full-size map, you get it.

It is certainly possible to show just the canal, but the larger context is very important to the history of the canal, especially its relation to the early railroads which ultimately drove the canal out of business. I could also upload a raster image rather than an SVG, so that it can be displayed at its designed resolution.

I created a special thumbnail image that shows the route better, and modified the link so that it displays the full-scale image. Let me know if this improves it.

Yes, I had a series of custom programs that extracted Census data from the summary files. I used Manifold to combine the data with Tiger/Line data for the tracts and create the state maps, as described in User:JimIrwin/Lineage of population maps

Ryan, do you want the raw data (e.g. a file containing the population density by census tract ID), or are you looking for some kind of GIS file, such as a SHP file with areas and a density attribute? I've created a SHP file for you that contains the tract areas, which you can download at Iowa_tracts_2010.zip. The attributes are from the Tiger/Line with two extra attributes: 100% population from the Census 2010 Summary File 1, and the population density that I computed, population per square mile. I hope this is helpful to you.

I am very impressed by your population density maps from the 2010 census. Do you plan to update your population density maps with data from the 2020 census? Hi Jim. Are you going to ever finish the maps of New Jersey that you rolled out. I don't about the other maps, but the map of Somerset County, both the interactive one and the static maps posted on individual towns, are incomplete by a sizeable margin. Do you use Google Maps to identify the municipal forms of townships, towns, villages and other census-designated locales in New Jersey, to populate the datapoints of your maps? I haven't looked in any regular way at the maps of New Jersey, but certainly the 2 I just viewed, Somerset and Mounmouth (you didn't work on that), are woefully incomplete, and in the case of the Mounmouth Map, entirely unfinished. I just thought that I would give you a heads up since you may have simply run into other confounding circumstances at the time you were working on this, which may have distracted or derailed you from completing the maps.
