ArbCom 2020 Elections voter messageSylmar Coordinates and ElevationHello Sanjay7373, Thank you for editing the Sylmar article with coordinate refinement and elevation. Much appreciated and liked. The official elevation of Sylmar as 1,270 feet above sea level is fascinating to me. Not just Sylmar, but all cities and towns are given an officially specifice elevation, even though the elevation is actually a range of heights above and below the officiall elevation. I am always fascianted with thinking of what exact place is chosen for the elevation. In the case of Sylmar, I think that elevationof 1,270 feet may refer to the "SYLMAR SQUARE" on Foothill Boulevard at the corner of Sayre Street, a historical and cultural area of stores and eateries. It may refer to the intersection of Foothill Boulevard and Sayre Street? I would like to verify that the elevation of 1,270 feet is actually SLYMAR SQUARE. A careful inspection of a USGS Topographic maps would assist in that regard. Wondering if there is a way to add an edit that recognizes the official elevation as being at SYLMAR SQUARE? By the way, welcome to being an editor, I became an editor only a few years ago, but active only in the last few months. Did you notice that I edited Sylmar article in the Topography section showing a range of elevation for the offical neighborhood known as Sylmar for the City of Los Angeles. I grew up in Sylmar, having been brought here by my parents that moved to Sylmar in 1960, but originally from Amsterdam, Holland, Nederland, below sea level, as an immigrant family arriving in the USA in 1956, sponsored by a church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, then in 1957, moved to Santa Monica, California, for three years until 1960. Players stats and moreAt the recent AFD, you made the following remark
I'd like to to put that in context. I took a look at the category covering the top draft picks for the WNBA over the years. Category:Women's National Basketball Association first overall draft picks Of these 23 entries: 3 did not play at a US college 2 US college but no stats 7 US college stats added by someone else 11 US college stats added by Sphilbrick In other words, for articles with US college stats, I have added more than everybody else combined. When I first started adding stats, I picked up on a format that someone else had used, so it is hardly surprising that a preponderance of the articles about women's basketball players largely follow a similar format. In recent weeks, I decided to undertake an effort to add stats to the many articles that were missing stats and I started using the same format. However, I noticed while working at my approach, which was to copy the data compiled by the NCAA, drop it into an Excel file and then create the "standard" format, I realized I was excluding the majority of the information. I'm fine with some of that. I think it would be overkill to list the number of turnovers, the number of double doubles, and the number of times a player has fouled out of the game, but it began to dawn on me that the focus was on ratios despite the fact that data sources had a mixture of ratios and totals with somewhat more emphasis on totals. That's what led me to open a discussion to talk about how we present statistics, and a tiny number of basketball editors, primarily interested in the NBA, decided that presenting only ratios made sense. They claim this was backed up by what's presented on the Internet, and when I pushed back with facts, there was no interest in collaboration or discussion. My approach using the sub pages was a serious attempt to accommodate their strongly held, albeit irrational belief that basketball biography should only present ratios. I thought we could eat our cake and have it too by presenting a table that only portrayed ratios while allowing the reader to click a button that allowed them to see the totals. I honestly thought that was a good way to accommodate their views and my desire to share totals. As we have seen, there was opposition to that approach. I'm fine with the decision that the sub page approach isn't the best approach, but I note that several contributors to the AFD, while supporting the removal of the sub pages, felt the information belong directly in the page. For what it's worth, adding statistics wasn't close to my end goal, it was just a precursor. I've noticed a substantial proportion of articles about women basketball players are missing images. I've had some success writing to colleges and getting permission for an image, but I always point them to the article in which the image will be used, and I don't feel comfortable asking a school to provide an image for what might be a not much more than a stub. I felt that adding statistics would add a little more "heft" to the article I've been improving references and adding some material while adding statistics. My next step was to start asking for images and then follow up with even more expansion of the article.
Important notice(no worries at all; I'm currently sending these to as many formally "unaware" people editing in the area as possible, because if a discussion at WP:AE is ever needed, a prior lack of such notifications can be very frustrating.)
