Wikipedia:WikiProject Linux#Participants is a bit of a mess. The list includes a user who only made two edits five years ago[1] and one who retired from Wikipedia and deleted his username.[2][3][4]. Some entries are dated, some are not. The list is neither alphabetical nor chronological - some names were added at the bottom, some at the top.

I propose the following cleanup:

• Any user name that redirects to a new user name will be changed to the new user name.

• Registered users who have not made an edit in five years will be deleted, with a note placed on their user talk page saying that the name will be re-inserted on request.

• Usernames that have been deleted, retired, stuck out from the list or indefinitely banned from Wikipedia will be deleted after two years.

• All dates will be removed from the list and the list will be alphabetized. An instruction will be added to insert your name alphabetically and sign with three tildes instead of four.

• Alternative to above: Dates will be added to names that are currently without them and the list will be sorted chronologically. An instruction will be added to insert your name at the bottom of the list.

Suggestions for better ways to clean up the list are welcome. --Guy Macon (talk) 20:14, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

I have spent the last week or so organizing and redesigning this wikiproject. you can see my proposed redesign here in my sandbox. FYI: Just looked over the SystemRescueCD page, and the last "External Link" looks to me like an ad was snuck into the page. It links to a rescue product from "Lazesoft" software, which doesn't seem to be related to the SystemRescueCD project. I'd like to introduce the Template:Version template to Wikipedia with the goal to establish one standard for version history tables (or lists). Hi everyone, I'm a former Wikipedian who came back to create an article about elementary OS. As you can see, there were previous attempts at this, all of which resulted in deletion. I've created what I believe to be a notable, neutral, verifiable base article at User:Kennethsime/sandbox, and copied it to Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/elementary OS. Unfortunately, I believe that an administrator must actually create the page at elementary OS, as I seem to be unable to myself. If anyone can offer help, please let me know. I am not sure if the current beta version justifies notabiliy. An interesting project nonetheless - however, has it received substantially more media coverage? Check the reasons for deletion, and decide yourself if you want to re-open discussion for this article. I recommend writing the article in your userspace as a starting point for discussion. I actually think there has been quite a bit of media coverage. Webupd8, OMG Ubuntu, and Tech Drive-In are all listed in sources in my "beta" article, and it's not hard to find others. How would I go about pursuing this? Kennethsime (talk) 04:42, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

"The page title you have tried to create has been protected from creation. The reason given is: AfD - see also Elementary (software project). [...] If you feel this page should be created, please raise the matter at deletion review, being careful to quote the exact page name or address and the reasons you feel the page should now be created. Pages are usually only blocked from creation after significant discussion or disruption, so good reasons for seeking review are usually required. You will also need to show that the previous concerns are no longer a problem.". Also, give the users that deleted the article a note on their talk page, that's always good to get things rolling. I hadn't found that, I did create an article for creation page although that process is apparently backlogged. The last admin to delete the page advised something along the lines of "if it makes it through AfC then the recreate will not be controversial." I will pursue the matter on deletion review as well. Surveillance awareness day is a proposal for the English Wikipedia to take special steps to promote awareness of global surveillance on February 11, 2014. That date is chosen to coincide with similar actions being taken by organizations such as Mozilla, Reddit, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

I propose to use the date format used by

• https://www.kernel.org
• http://distrowatch.com

namely the ISO 8601 date format, in references for all articles that belong more than to any other WikiProject to the WikiProject Linux or one of its sub-projects.

A common standard will make editing, reading and in- and outgoing sharing for all Linux-related articles easier.

• Oppose. Per WP:MOSDATE, I believe there is a preference for dates to be spelled out as Month dd, yyyy. Further, in the diff you've given (which I have reverted), most of the dates were already in that apparently preferred format and the few that were not should be changed to that preferred format, not all of them into purely numeric format. I cam upon the article SCHED DEADLINE by chance and was immediately was struck by the unconventional typography. Firstly the title is in all caps and secondly every occurrence of the term and similar other terms are "encapsulated" in a grey box produced by using "<code></code>" markup. I'm not at all familiar with the topic of software so I'm not sure if this deviation from the usual WP typography conventions is normal for articles about software. If one looks at the Linux kernel literature, the common, agreed upon name for this scheduler is SCHED_DEADLINE, all caps with an underscore, so the above is a misspelling. Hence I think, with the underscore, this is the correct title. You're correct that the name is not programming code, so shouldn't be encased in code tags--this was probably just a well-intentioned highlighting of the term that isn't quite appropriate. While unusual, this sort of naming isn't unique in the programming world, e.g., HAKMEM, SLUB (software). --Mark viking (talk) 17:49, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi! I had translated AV_Linux (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AV_Linux) on russian language (https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/AV_Linux) but can't save a correction in a language-list (in list of language there no russian).

schily (talk · contribs) (Jörg Schilling, of cdrecord fame) has removed Linux specific details I added to open (system call).[5] I do not understand why these Linux-specific details can not be added, as they are absolutely necessary for making UNIX-like systems concurrent. I do not want to start a revert war, so I am hoping to start a discussion here. The majority of UNIX like systems are Linux systems. I maintain that covering Linux behavior is more important than documenting POSIX, if we had to choose. But we don't, we just have to qualify sentences with "this only works on Linux", like I did. While it is fine to seek advice at places such as this if you are uncertain of your position, the first step in resolving almost all conflicts over content is to discuss the conflict with your opponent on the article talk page. Wikipedia is built around a model of collegiality and collaboration through discussion. If the other editor won't discuss, consider WP:DISCFAIL; if discussion happens, but fails then try dispute resolution (which generally will not be allowed without extensive prior discussion). I was wondering if someone familiar with subject could please join this discussion: Talk:Windows Subsystem for Linux § Windows Subsystem for Linux targets GNU software. Is there any encyclopedic value in it?

The editor who started the thread seems to intend for the thread to justify this contribution:

Windows Subsystem for Linux is mostly limited to run the GNU runtime system and libraries, which most of the software targets when dealing with operating systems with Linux.

My concern is that this contribution is intricate details that makes sense to only a very small minority and is redundant to this sentence, which is already in the article:

This subsystem cannot run all Linux software, such as [...]

Does Firefox really belong in this WikiProject? I ask because it's a cross-platform web browser, perhaps the most cross-platform one of all, except the command-line browsers. So it's certainly not Linux-exclusive. The only argument for it being in this WikiProject that I can come up with is that many distributions (e.g. Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu) ship with it as their default browser. This WikiProject was never supposed to mutually exclusive to others. Any app that runs on Linux and has a Wikipedia article falls within its purview.

Also, please do not let metonymy distract you. The app that you run on Linux and call "Firefox" is not the same app that you run on Windows and call "Firefox", no matter how similar in look and functionality they are.

The article BackSlash Linux was recently created. Since it was previously deleted per the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/BackSlash Linux, I thought it might qualify for WP:CSD#G4, but the reviewing admin said the text is substantially different from the deleted version. Also, there appears to be a conflict of interest issue with one of the article's authors. So I'm just bringing this to the attention of this WikiProject so that it can be reviewed by editors experienced in this area and they can determined what (if anything) needs to be done with this article. The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. This project is already listed in related projects. There's no problem with joining forces, but I don't know how would that work – I believe they already edit articles related to Linux. Also, either I don't really understand how wikiprojects are supposed to work or there's not much for anybody to do here. I do like what I am seeing at WP:FOSS. Part of me says to copy what they are doing there, and part of me says to simply join them. Let me ask everyone here: how important is it that we have a separate project and/or task force working on Linux specifically as opposed to working on Linux as part of what WP:FOSS is doing? I think that this wikiproject should join WP:FOSS. It will take time and effort to make this as well maintained and I think this effort could be put to make WP:FOSS a more lively space. I have a belief verging on certainty that 95% of Linux subjects are within FOSS scope, and the rest 5% is projects big enough to get interest from WP:SOFTWARE or WP:COMPUTING.
Interestingly, I've also found Wikipedia:WikiProject_Desktop_Linux which seems to be even more dead than this one, but maybe more diverging from FOSS, as it may naturally include gaming and other proprietary software. Point being, it will be more pragmatic, while FOSS is about software, but also movement, philosophy, civil liberties, and so on. K4rolB (talk) 13:07, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

The Linux kernel is FOSS. Let's move it there. In all seriousness, this project should move to FOSS as a task force. That makes the most sense to me. Most of the Linux ecosystem is FOSS, it's kernel is FOSS, and it's used extensively in all environments (e.g., by companies as servers, as PCs, Raspberry PI, etc.). As a taskforce under FOSS, we could use the existing governance of the FOSS project, have it guide our direction (since we don't appear to have on right now), and can garner interest from their existing contributors to help us out. -proxxz ^talk 15:18, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

I'm thinking that if we merge with WP:FOSS (which is really a task force of WP:SOFTWARE), it should be as another task force. This would allow us to preserve the current organization and tagging of Linux articles (the talk page banner can just wrap {{WP Software|linux=y}}), and maintains a Linux-specific venue in which to have coherent discussions. We would then be sister task forces under WP:SOFTWARE at that point, which would enable closer collaboration between the two. Status quo is fine as well — Linux is a large enough topic to warrant a WikiProject, even if it is a bit quiet in here. — AfroThundr ^{(u · t · c)} 03:15, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

To elaborate my views. It is a bit quiet in here. Of the 127 watchers of this site, about 7 has responded to my discussion of making it inactive. (Obviously it is a discussion of importance. I personally visited the user page of 117 of 202 participants on the list to inform them of the discussion.) I'm not a frequent user myself, but I think the project pages is overwhelming to any bypasser if its not more active and welcoming. People come to wikipedia to edit articles, not to take on immense administrative tasks. Does anyone have ideas how to make this project a tool of cooperation?

• A simple but maintained todolist is by far the most important task at this point.
• An updated participant list would encourage people to ask for help if they are bold. :-D

I think we stretch ourselves too wide. We should acknowledge that there are only a few of us, at least for some time, and maintaining many overlapping projects is too much work – as You said, no one wants to take on administrative tasks.
I think we should scale down and create a minimum viable product — double down on creating some movement here. I still believe that WP:FOSS is a better place to start, as it's already well-defined and structured so it feels easier to start it up. — K4rolB (talk) 14:50, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

I am fine with whatever the consensus is, but the above does not get my position right. No doubt I was unclear. I don't think another task force is needed and I don't think we have enough participants to make one work. I think we should join an existing task force (I am thinking FOSS, but am open to some other taskforce) rather than trying to form a new task force. I am OK with making the wikiproject historical or with leaving the Wikiproject as it is with a notice telling the user that they might want to help the existing taskforce -- seldom-used Wikiprojects don't harm anything, and someone may some day put in the effort to make it a lot more active. --Guy Macon (talk) 13:53, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Am I wrong to view this project as inactive? According to the guide projects are generally considered inactive if the talk page has received nothing other than routine/automated announcements or unanswered queries for a year or more.

Sandbox Organiser A place to help you organise your work

Hi all

I've been working on a tool for the past few months that you may find useful. Wikipedia:Sandbox organiser is a set of tools to help you better organise your draft articles and other pages in your userspace. It also includes areas to keep your to do lists, bookmarks, list of tools. You can customise your sandbox organiser to add new features and sections. Once created you can access it simply by clicking the sandbox link at the top of the page. You can create and then customise your own sandbox organiser just by clicking the button on the page. All ideas for improvements and other versions would be really appreciated.

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

MOS:LINUX is part of Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Computing (failed proposal), which as the name implies, is a failed proposal. However, as Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Computing (failed proposal)#Linux vs GNU/Linux shows, there is strong support for the MOS:LINUX part of that proposed page. I think that MOS:LINUX could be made part of some other MoS page or guideline, but I wanted to get input to see what the best way to go about doing that might be? - Aoidh (talk) 18:45, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
