A bunch of articles have been created that essentially describe the same concepts and ideas under different names. (Disaster management, Emergency management, emergency preparedness, etc.) I propose that this project should strive to take these articles and merge them together into one comprehensive, well-written article (making mention of the different names). -- backburner001 16:17, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

I fully agree, that was what made me decide to start this probject! At the same time I doubt that it will be possible to merge them all into one article. I see what we need as a structure/hierarchy with one main page offering an overarching introduction to the subject. Currently, the closest thing that we have to this is the Emergency management page, but I would prefer it to be the Disaster management page since that term is more generic and not centered around 'blue-light services' to the same extent. Then we would have to agree upon a structure without hurting too many feelings. --Drdan 12:42, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Although we may not be able to merge everything into one article, I think it was possible in the case of the Disaster management and Emergency management pages. When I merged these two articles, the text in both were essentially describing the same concepts in exactly the same way (by identifying the four phases, etc). As for the name of the article, I question whether or not Disaster management is really more broad. To me it actually seems like a more narrow focus; it carries with it the implication that the phases of the process are only applicable to large-scale events (such as Hurricane Katrina, etc). Regardless of what name we choose to stick with, there is no reason why the article that results cannot contain mention of alternate names of the discipline. According to the WikiProject on Stub sorting we need to mark at least 30 relevant articles with our stub template {{dm-stub}} for it to be approved for use. See [[Category:Disaster management stubs]]. So please spread it and the {{Disaster management}} at the same time. --Drdan 13:39, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello. I'm a member of the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing articles using these criteria, and we are are asking for your help. As you are most aware of the issues surrounding your focus area, we are wondering if you could provide us with a list of the articles that fall within the scope of your WikiProject, and that are either featured, A-class, B-class, or Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Seeing that we barely have started the WikiProject we do not have a massive collection. I know of the following:

• September 11, 2001 attacks
• 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake
• Columbine High School massacre

There are probably more. I would like to see more on policy and hazards, but they do not seem to have the same level of quality. Anyone else have any examples to submit? --rxd 07:50, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

There's quite a bit of article pertaining to Hurricane Katrina. I won't bother to list them all here, but if you go to the main page, there is a template listing for them all. Dr. Cash 23:35, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

There are quite a few missing disasters that need to be created. However, I think that our focus should remain on improving the central policy articles and categorisation. In the meantime I have to figure out a way to store the disasters that I find are missing. Any suggestions?

I think another possible contribution this project can make is to add some documents to WikiSource--the part of the wiki with public domain documents. There are a TON of laws, Executive Orders, reports, etc. related to Disaster Management. We could help add this to the wiki. This website has some digitized versions of laws and executive orders that would just need to be copied, pasted, and cleand up for WikiSource.--Wikiwriter706 00:22, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

I will have a look at it. If I do something it will proably be in international law, where I have some experience. We're discussing this new stub over at stub sorting, to cover fire/ambulance/search and rescue (maybe not police). Margaret----I don't believe Congressman Leo Ryan's murder should be considered aviation-related. He flew in on a plane, he was trying to leave when he was murdered on the ground. I've just created Category:Disaster management tools - there may be a better name, but at least I wanted to start the category.

Regarding what belongs in the category. I think it should only be added if the article refers to use in disaster management (and that reference should ideally be sourced as well). There are other technologies that may seem suitable, e.g. solar water disinfection, but the "See also" section I think will take care of those. --Singkong2005 04:52, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
