Susan Kare

Hello Zeibgeist, you may have seen that I reinstated the {{Improve images}} template on the Susan Kare article. I've tried to make it clear what I'm up to on the article's Talk page, though I thought it might be useful to also add some curtesy links (here, here, and here), if you're interested. The main idea is to try to encourage folks to help us improve the photos on BLPs (via WP:PICYOU). I'm also particularly interested in design and visual arts related subjects (where it can add meaningful context to show good examples of their work). Any help or advice welcome! Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 09:06, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cl3phact0, thank you for the explanation and the links to those discussions. I like the idea of asking article subjects to provide pictures of themselves, but I'd be curious to how often that actually happens as a result of the template being added. I could easily see this template languishing indefinitely on articles that already have adequate images. Zeibgeist (talk) 17:55, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm certainly aware of the possibility that this effort amounts to nothing. There are a few others who are also pitching in with tweaks to the template and other subtle improvements here and there too. Let's give it a bit of time an see if there are tangible results. It costs nothing and may get something. I'm also closely monitoring the outcome, so if the conclusion is that this doesn't work, then by all means, let's not just let the template languish in abject inutility ad infinitum. Also, another related project which overlaps (to some degree) is WP:UBI, where the "Improve images" template has found its way onto a number of the examples shown (and I believe may have even resulted in at least a few successful "upgrades"). Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 19:13, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, definitely worth a trial run to see what the results are. Thanks again for the communication! Zeibgeist (talk) 23:18, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Zeibgeist,

I would like to contribute an additional argument in favor of restoring the article on RE/Flex. RE/Flex is currently the only actively maintained and fully-featured alternative to Flex, the well-known lexical analyzer generator. It is explicitly mentioned on the Flex Wikipedia page as a modern substitute that supports Unicode, which Flex does not.

Furthermore, while Flex can generate C++ code through flex++, its support is only partial—for instance, input buffer switching with C++ iostreams is not fully implemented. In contrast, RE/Flex offers complete and robust C++ support.

In this sense, RE/Flex can be seen as the modern successor to Flex, just as Flex once was to Lex. Given the foundational role that lexical analyzers like Lex and Flex have played in the history of computer programming, RE/Flex is of clear encyclopedic relevance.

Its growing user base, active maintenance, and significantly better performance benchmarks compared to Flex (in terms of both speed and Unicode support) further justify its relevance and notability. I believe these factors justify a dedicated Wikipedia article.

Best regards

Jihelgé1 (talk) 21:44, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I am a French computer scientist at CNRS, Sorbonne University and IRCAM, in real-time dedicated programming language, and I use RE/Flex in the implementation of my research projects (e.g. Antescofo). Jihelgé1 (talk) 21:44, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jihelgé1, I notice that this message is your first edit to Wikipedia. I'm curious how you became aware of the article's deletion? As noted at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/RE/flex, you are welcome to request that the article be restored since the discussion was closed as a "soft delete". See the directions at WP:Requests for undeletion for more details. Zeibgeist (talk) 22:31, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I learned about the page deletion in the notes of one of the latest RE/Flex releases. This isn't my first interaction with Wikimedia, but this time I opted for a non-anonymous login, but I'm still a “newbye”. Thanks for pointing me to WP:Requests for undeletion. Desmond O'Grady photo

Hi, I have sorted out the permissions for the photo of Desmond O'Grady and reuploaded it. - Wwallacee (talk) 10:12, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me. Thank you for following the proper procedure with VRTS. Zeibgeist (talk) 18:41, 14 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Zeibgeist! Back in August 2020 you tagged this article as being closely paraphrased. I've looked as well as I know how but I can't find a source. Can you point me in the right direction to see what you saw? I'll rectify it then. Cheers! Oona Wikiwalker (talk) 04:38, 26 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Oona Wikiwalker, thanks for following up on this! The URL of the source the article was originally paraphrased from is broken, but it looks like there is an archive at the Wayback Machine (see this version of the article for comparison). After re-reading, it looks like there is really only close paraphrasing in the first paragraph of the history section; not too egregious, but it could still use a bit of cleanup. Let me know if you have any questions! Zeibgeist (talk) 05:13, 26 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Articles of deletion

Hello, hope you're having a great day or night! I was wondering what the process is to withdraw my nomination for a deletion of an article? Nichin32 (talk) 19:37, 31 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nichin32, it looks like you've figured it out, but thanks for your message! Zeibgeist (talk) 20:23, 31 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sourcing the St. John's Bridge in media

On the page for St. John's Bridge, I had put in two items about how it appears in a book and a TV show. You reverted it as unsourced. What would be needed as sources so it could be put back in?

There's maps in the books that show the Ghost Bridge physically matches it and shows its location where the actual bridge is located on the Willamette River, plus it's featured in promotional artwork for the upcoming film by Laika. As for the TV series, it appears in many of the episodes.

Let me know. Thanks. --RRabbit42 (talk) 18:16, 10 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RRabbit42, as explained at MOS:POPCULT: "Cultural aspects of the subject should be included only if they are supported by reliable secondary or tertiary sources that discuss the subject's cultural impact in some depth. The mere appearance of the subject in a film, song, video game, television show, or the like is insufficient." The fact that the bridge simply appears in a piece of media is not considered sufficient reason to start an "in popular culture" section. If you can find secondary sources that discuss the use of the bridge in the book/TV show you mentioned, feel free to restore the material (promotional artwork from the studio is not a secondary source, to be clear). Let me know if you have any questions. Zeibgeist (talk) 18:44, 10 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to The Greenbrier Companies. When you were adding content to the page, you added duplicate arguments to a template which can cause issues with how the template is rendered. In the future, please use the preview button before you save your edit; this helps you find these errors as they will display in yellow at the top of the page. Thanks. Alliance High School (Oregon)

Please Add to this article it is significantly lacking i am a student at this school and I would like a better article Kiba827 (talk) 02:56, 9 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'd recommend you do it yourself, but seeing as how you seem to lack the ability to write with proper capitalization and punctuation I'm not sure that would be a good idea. Is there any specific information you think is missing? Zeibgeist (talk) 03:04, 9 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
