The Tornado History Project site [2] uses the same data from the NOAA, but for tornadoes that are affecting more then one county it only lists as one tornado only (like this example from the Birmingham Outbreak) in 1998 as opposed to the NOAA which list the same tornado as many times as per the number of counties it affected. The THP way to list the tornadoes is somewhat much easier for counting the overall number of tornadoes and that certainly helped me for producing those lists of confirmed tornadoes for the larger outbreaks like the May 2003 event and the one I'm currently doing, the Memorial Outbreak in 2004. The THP is making quite a good job to simply the work.--JForget 18:16, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

January 2008 Tornado Outbreak Sequence-Details the recent tornado outbreak (see section below) Featured story This featured story focuses on the relative WikiWork for this project. The relative WikiWork is the measure of how lose a project is to having every article featured. It is a complex calculation; ω = a + 2g + 3b + 4s + 5t where a is A-class articles, g is GA-class articles, b is B-class articles, s is start-class articles, and t is stub-class articles. Thus, the closer you are to 0 (zero), the closer you are to having every article featured. The WikiWork number for every class is added, then divided by the number of articles, similar to averaging, and it is found that the relative WikiWork for this project is Ω = 4.182. Ω is a symbol for the relative WikiWork factor. That is not the best number, as we are closer to 5 than we are to 0, and we are very close to 5. This means that the majority of the articles in the project are either stub, or start. That is what we need to change. So, while more severe weather articles are good, we should try not to publish as many stub class, and fewer start class articles. (The following text is from User:JForget's nomination.) User:CrazyC83 - One of the most active (if not the most) members in recent tornado activity coverage and monitoring. Recent examples of this includes the February-March 2007 Tornado Outbreak in Alabama and Missouri, the May 2007 Tornado Outbreak in Kansas and Oklahoma and the January 2008 Tornado Outbreak Sequence in Missouri, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama. Had also made coverage in non-article tornado events such as the New Orleans tornado event on February 13, 2007 and the tornado event associated with the Superstorm of December 16, 2007. User:CrazyC83 made numerous edits, more than one hundred, to 2008 Super Tuesday tornado outbreak. Significant storms Main article: January 2008 Tornado Outbreak Sequence Significant storms last month included the outbreak in the United States in early to mid-January that produced 71 tornadoes and killed three people. Several tornado emergencies were issued in association with supercells during this outbreak. This outbreak was very similar to a classic spring severe weather outbreak, but extending farther north than even most late season outbreaks. The hardest hit areas on January 7 were the Springfield, Missouri metropolitan area and areas immediately to the north of Chicago, three people were killed near Springfield throughout the Southwestern Missouri Ozarks. On January 8, my area, the Tri-State region of Evansville, Indiana, was hit with the tornado outbreak. Only a few funnel clouds were reported in my area. Most tornadoes of the day were confined to the Memphis, Tennessee area and Eastern Arkansas, where one person was killed. On January 9 only a few wind and hail reports were received[1]. On January 10, however, the action started back up. More tornadic storms developed across the Southern United States, including several significant storms that produced tornadoes. These tornadoes severely damaged rual towns in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. The most notable of these tornadoes was reported in Lamar County, Alabama where 1 person was injured as several buildings were destroyed in this EF-3 tornado. Thanks for your dedicated work to continuing to improve the article. Concerning the references, if the url no longer works, you can first try to restore it by entering it at the Internet archive. Occasionally, a former version of the website was saved and can be useful for directing readers to the archived link. However, if you are unable to update the link, you can still keep it as a reference, but place "dead link" after it. This way, readers are still able to view the source and decide if they want to pay for an archived newspaper article or have to seek some sort of database. It seems most sources have it listed an F4 including this, this and [3] while this one discussed about lowering the rating. However, this still shows it as an F5. I had no choice to add in the tornado list and infobox that the rating is disputed. JForget 22:48, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I'm working on an early draft of the History of Saint Paul (be gentle; this is a very early draft). I know that in 1904 a tornado (or cyclone by some counts) hit St. Paul, severely damaging the Smith Avenue Bridge and the Pioneer Building. Would you like to write a section about the event to add to my draft? I have a lot of other sections to write and thought you might be interested in collaborating. Over several months I've been trying to work toward a completely automated portal. The only needed input is someone to select and insert the "Selected Article" and "Selected Picture", which I was hoping the WikiProject would pick up. In the mean time, I was hoping to find a nice weather event for every day of the year. I see you've been adding some, but if you'd like to keep adding facts as you find them, I'd appreciate it. I'd eventually like to only have non-stubs, but right now I think having an entry for every date is more important. If an event is important in world history but will likely never have a comprehensive article (such as many foreign cyclones in the past which killed thousands), I think those should be included in any case. Yeah, I've been listing tropical cyclones, though only the more famous or unusual ones. I've also been listing birthdays of famous meteorologists or inventors who made weather-related devices, as well as other miscellaneous listings like creation dates for weather services. All in all, anything weather-related with its own article has been fair game so far.

I suppose we should come up with a standardized set of rules for selections (especially if the portal is going to become more of a WikiProject collaboration, which is my ultimate goal), does all of this sound ok so far? -RunningOnBrains 17:21, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

An alternative format for the selected biography would be to have a set of possible selected biography pages, and have a random one show up when the page is visited (they do this at Portal:Earth sciences quite successfully). On the other hand, there is quite an abundance of articles in Category:Meteorologists, it remains to be seen how many of these are viable for our purposes.

On a related note, I set up a "Suggestions" page which will take suggestions for all three selected thingies. The guidelines I posted there are the guidelines I've been using myself, so feel free to bring up any concerns as these are only my thoughts.-RunningOnBrains 07:40, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

I'm proposing a merger on an article you worked on. Since the shelf clouds and roll clouds are subset of the arcus clouds, they should be integrated into the later article. This would make a more complete article instead of splitting the information among three articles. Anwer in Talk:arcus cloud.

I'm sure WP:1.0 bot assessments wont start for another week or two at least, so I was going to cross that bridge when it comes. The way it looks at least half of B-class articles will need to be downgraded (for both meteorology and severe weather project), but at least a few should be upgraded from Start-class. It may be helpful to go back and re-assess every article in WP:METEO and WP:SEVERE. Like I said, bridges to be crossed later.

Do you like what I've written at the severe weather assessment page? The C-class criteria I wrote up is basically the old B-class, and I thought B-class would be to GA what A is supposed to be to FA. Let me know if you like what I've written.-RunningOnBrains 23:42, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

It's a good article. Meteorologically, the only thing I see as a possible error is the talk of Pacific air masses (like in the zonal flow section). Keep in mind that Pacific air masses lose their Pacific character by the time they move through the Cascades. Zonal flow brings in modified Pacific air, which is warmer/drier than it was while over the Pacific due to the wringing out of the air by the time it passes the continental divide, then the subsequent downslope of the air mass thereafter. Downslope winds don't just warm up the air, they dry it out as well. Outside of the meteorology, there were a couple possible cases of non-encyclopedaic word choices, which are easy to spot. Althought they are very rare, exept for the season they physically are produce the same way as any waterspout : strong low level instability and weak wind shear. The Saint Paul, Minnesota article is being prepared for GA Nomination ahead of the 2008 RNC and the attention the article will be receiving (and in some cases already has).

Other editors and myself have been working on the article lately and we would like to you to help. If you have additions, comments, concerns, questions or other feed back, it is all appreciated. There is a peer review already set up and detailed checklist of issues that need to be fixed is on the talk page. These items can be crossed off when completed. The only problem is it creates ugly redlinks. If we could just create a weather fact (with an associated article) for every day, then we wouldnt even need the subpages (such as Portal:Weather/On this day/07/06) because we could just use some internal variable magic (they use it at Portal:Tropical cyclones).-RunningOnBrains 05:37, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

It's mostly under control now, but once you settle on the article name, let's take it slow and make sure everything ends up in the right place. I suspect the dash suggestion was correct, but if moving it back, you've got to get all those various pieces I listed on the FAC, so we aren't left with redlinks. Image:Demolished-2.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:Image:Kasota damage.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all MediaWiki wiki's. The article I wrote: Storm train already has most of the information (more information than Training (meteorology)), and the information in my article should remain untouched (unless it's being improved, not copied). In addition, I added the information in Training (meteorology) to my article, but not a direct copy. I reworded it and put the information in the sections that they belonged in. I've also added to the brief description of the article at the top: "(also known as training in meteorology)". I think it is mostly referred to as "storm train", so I think the title should be left alone. So I wanted to ask before I redirect Training (meteorology)) to my article that already has the information. Rlevse told me: Use the talkpage to figure out which article you guys will keep, otherwise you two will likely end up in an edit war and may get blocked. And although he/she told me: "Wiki uses the GFDL license, so using something you wrote in another articles is not plagarism.", I would prefer if someone asks before copying my work. -- IRP (talk) 17:18, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
