Deletion

I started a page, then came back the following morning to add more and found that you'd deleted it for lack of apparent notability. Is this normal procedure on Wikipedia? I did not think it necessary to back up my content. Wouldn't it have been better to comment or ask about notability first? Eliptis 20:18, 3 March 2007 (UTC)

Firstly, I did not delete the Larissa (yacht) page you made because I am not an administrator. I just tagged it because there was no notability mention in what you had written. This is a minimum requirement for any Wikipedia article. You made notability claims in the article Monte Carlo (yacht). Basically Larissa (yacht) was not in any way ready for prime time, even as a stub, and a Goggle search did not bring up anything significant other than a company website for the ship builder. Secondly, I suggest that in future, if your article is not ready, make a draft in your own sandbox, as I am doing here on one of my userpages. When it is in decent form and basically ready, with sources and is notable, then paste, or move, the page into the main space. Otherwise short articles with little content and no notability will likely be tagged again and deleted again which I presume you want to avoid. Hope that helps. Hello again

Thanks for the very nice message you sent me a while ago. I've decided to come back and I will be doing something on the philatelic front again fairly soon. I didn't intend to neglect it for so long but I became entangled in the cricket project and had to see it through.

I know George Williams personally and we do collaborate on a lot of our research, especially stamps where we are in common: otherwise, he's rugby and I'm cricket! George has said he wants to do more on WP but it's the time factor with him.

Bio-quant deletion?

Hi, I noticed your deletion tag on the Bio-quant article. It didn't seem like advertising to me, apart from the word "expertise". It was a bit short, certainly, and not heavy on facts, but I've seen worse... What do you think? Hi this is Kitmaster here, Steve Knight, Curator of the Colne Valley Postal History Museum in Essex www.cvphm.org. I have just uploaded a short essay on early post boxes. It needs all the indexing and referencing adding, but as I only started working with Wikipeadia in the last two hours I have not worked out how to do it yet! Irish stamps

I will help out where I can. I will take a good look at the article and post something here or there or somewhere. I will let you know. You can check out this page in the meantime to see how I usually apply the GA criteria, and this essay or whatever you call it, has plenty of helpful links in it. Some editors are more strict on certain things than I so bear that in mind, we all vary, some are more lenient. You can also check out the three GAs I have done recently, Joseph F. Stamp vending machine

I have initiated a page on Stamp vending machines. I would appreciate your critique of it if you have time. I will start scanning my prints from a tour of Dublin in 2001 to help expand the pre-1922 material for the Republic and I'm marshalling some thoughts on Ludlows too. Nice start indeed. I have a few comments, constructive I hope. Remember that as an encyclopaedia too much detail is not necessary and while you may have personal knowledge of some aspects of a topic Wikipedia does not allow personal research only verifiable information. So be careful not to include statements that are not contained in good sources. The other thing to remember is that a topic like this requires a "worldview" because you can find these in the US; the UK & commonwealth were not the only places to use Stamp vending machines. I will see what I can find on the US, maybe I can even get a photo or two. BTW, check these out [1], [2], [3] . The Ludlows is another whole topic but I still cannot find my letter box info especially my book on Irish boxes that contain pre-1922 info. I used to maintain a list of rare pre-1922 boxes in Ireland and will have to send it to you. ww2censor 14:46, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

Wow! That NZ site is great. I knew about Kermode, but not about Dickie. I will definately link from my own pages to that site. The US stuff is interesting too, the Wiki page on coil stamps is quite useful in that respect. I agree it needs a worldview which is why I have been careful to add UK to the section, although it would seem Kermode sold their mechs around the world! Re the source material, it all comes from PO engineering docs or other published articles (which need referencing) but although the PO notices are dated 1936 I'm not sure if they are out of copyright and therefore suitable for uploading. Re the Irish boxes, LBSG now has a pretty definitive listing for the Republic following three years of intense surveying and a complete numbering/ID system specially for Irish boxes; not sure if you have seen that?Kitmaster 20:47, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

Glad to be of assistance. My friend Brian Warren is one of the co-authors of the Irish post-1922 listing and I can work on that section if you like, now that I found my book. I also have a listing of the pre-1922 notable boxes. You probably don't know it but Brian and I were responsible for encouraging the Irish National Museum to refurbish the Ashworth box and I have a copy of the report we presented, but much of it is original research which is not permitted, so I will have to extract the most appropriate, verifiable, information.

BTW, I also have some info on Irish stamp vending machines that I will have to cobble together. A series of coil stamps were issued in the early 1930s for vending machines that were all around the place but I shall have to figure out if I can track their locations, or the type of location they were installed. I shall have to email Brian to check some facts. He is a mine of philatelic, and related, information. ww2censor 02:12, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree, he is a very knowledgable chap and helped me find the key boxes in Dublin during my 2001 visit inc. Kilmacoon Hill which I would never have found and two K1 Kiosks. Were the Irish SVMs of the same pattern as the UK? Regard NOR policy, what happens if someone else quotes your report in an article that you have contributed to? Regarding the PO Docs, I believe that 1936 is now out of copyright (70 years) and I'm thinking about uploading it. What do you think?Kitmaster 21:51, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the tips. The bottom line is that it's too difficult for me to catch them then ask for help. For now, I'll only add higher level warnings (the one that threaten block) if I can then block them. Since I'm not an administrator, I'll just lower level warn and leave it at that. F.Y.I. → Citizendium

Because of the incredible amount of vandalism and the prevalence of anonymous users on Wikipedia, I am devoting more of my attention to the new, more controlled competitor, Citizendium, and less to Wikipedia.

It is not certain that Citizendium will survive and prosper, but I think it is worth the support of honest users of Wikipedia. If it does prosper, I will likely work with it exclusively in the future.

Hawaiian Missionaries

In the infobox for Hawaiian Missionaries, you replaced the stated quantity with "few exist."

From the text of the article, "...only about 200 have survived (Scott Trepel's census in the Siegel catalog lists 197, but see below), of which 28 are unused, and 32 are on cover." The census is on line as one of the article's references.

True, but the 2-cent stamp shown in the infobox has only 15 known and is the scarcest one of the 4, so "few exist" is a correct statement. However, I have added some details concerning the scarcity in the text together with a reference to the survey of all 4 stamps that together come to the 200. I hope that clarifies it for you. Motorcycle article

I am far from being an expert in the field. The article looks good in terms of thoroughness to me as an outsider, but again I may not necessarily be the most knowledgable person in the field. Basically, I rated it as a "B" because the FA and GA designations require formal procedures, and the A grade is generally fairly hard to get. Maybe you have amnesia but this edit, your second, of the National Socialist German Workers Party article removed most of the contents leaving a virtually blank page that had to be reverted by Everyguy and you even left a comment "this is wrong" so you obviously knew you were doing was removing content. Your previous edit changed the number of people who died, from 60 million to 6 million creating misinformation. remember that all content is expected to be verifiable and you gave no reference for altering a well accepted quantity. So that is what I am talking about. This type of editing is regarded as vandalism and is not tolerated on Wikipedia, so it was reverted and I left a message on your talk page. For your information I do know what I am talking about but I am just a regular editor, like you, who does not like to see vandalism on the pages. The advise given to first try out editing in the Sandbox is good advise and you should try it, only then make correct and positive contribution edits and you will be thanked, not scolded. ww2censor 17:55, 9 May 2007 (UTC)

I don't mean to be mean but maybe you cannot read either, so read on. You made the above post from the IP address 71.53.65.109 and when I look at the edits made by this IP address I get this result page that show all the edits you made. If you click on the word diff beside the 2nd edit to National Socialist German Workers Party which has the words "this is wrong" you will see that the edit removed most of the page's content. That was edit made by the IP address you use. Check out the links I have provided to refresh your memory. Anyway, I was just letting you know that constructive contributions are what is needed not vandalism, so just do the right thing and we will put this to bed now even if you don't agree with the facts. This instance just illustrates why it is better to become a registered user with your own uses-name and password, so both of us can track exactly who mad what edit. Stalker

Hi. You may already know this by now, but - based on some perceived slight - an IP based user at 66.248.222.34 (Shared IP:BEA Systems) has trawled your contrib history and is randomly reverting your contribs. (I only noticed because he re-introduced some NN/hoax stuff in the Ennis article in the process). The behaviour of this editor is harrassment in the extreme, and (were it a named user) would be cause for caution/ban. I'm not sure what your options are when it's an IP based editor, but - at the very least - you may want to check and see what contributions you've made recently that have been reverted in this "attack". Stratford-on-Slaney

Stratford, also known as Stratford-on-Slaney, is a small village on the River Slaney in West Wicklow in Ireland. - 14:25, May 19, 2007 Ww2censor

Indeed Ww! That is what I always knew it as - and I was going to call the article by that name till I noticed the sign; checking around I couldn't find much support for Stratford-on-Slaney online; so rather than have someone revert it I settled for Stratford. But I can personally attest that 20 years ago it was universally known as Stratford-on-Slaney in SW Wicklow. (Sarah777 13:38, 19 May 2007 (UTC))

Remember that online is not the only source for such info. Try using a Gazetteer, if you can find one. I have the Gazetteer of Ireland published by the Government Publications office that I presume is still in Molesworth Street. My copy is the 1989 issue and also gives the Irish names, though maybe they have a new one since then. According to this web page a new edition should have been out in 2003. If they do have it, let me know. Also look here. FYI I used to live in West Wicklow! ww2censor 13:53, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip. And the link to An Post seems fairly definitive, doesn't it? My own location down on the farm was only a half dozen miles west of there! While the name was often shortened to "Stratford" in conversation (just as Newtownmountkennedy is spoken of mainly as 'Newtown' locally) - the full name was always understood to be Stratford-on-Slaney. Please do not add unnecessary text/warnings to peoples talk pages, as you did to mine. My talk page is not a mere directory of warnings, nor should it be used for wrongful accusations. Inappropriate text includes (but is not limited to) information pertaining to rule violations I did not commit, and accusations of adding links when I did no such thing. My only edit as been a revert, to an earlier version of the article, from an edit that clearly wasn't in the articles' best interest. Actually the user talk page IS the appropriate place the inform editors about these mistakes and errors as well as the specific place for user warnings too. The warning was quite a necessary one though you may not think so. If you look at the edit you made, while technically it is a revert to an earlier version, that version included links to linkspam sites, so you substituted data onto the page which was also a linkspam link. Any myspace links and the tribute festival link you added (or reverted back to) are not allowed according to linking guidelines, as I told you in the post I left on your page, if you had bothered to read it instead of getting upset.

Sometimes it is necessary to warn (gently as I did with you, and sometimes more forcefully) editors who are unfamiliar with the policy and guidelines that they have made a mistake. That is all I was doing for you. BTW, removing the warning notice I left on your talk page is also regarded as vandalism because it belongs on your page. Deleting it may make you feel like you never made the mistake but all of us have made some mistakes, especially in the beginning, so I suggest you learn from it. aerogram and other edits.

The aerogram article clearly lists this as a form of envelope. The fact that it serves multiple purposes does not mean that it should be excluded from categories. It should however be included in all appropriate categories. I made the change while looking for envelopes that I was aware of that were not in the main category.

The removal of the stub is subjective. However when I read that article I felt that is was short and a good article. There is no specific guideline when a stub is no longer a stub. I frequently find articles several pages long listed as a stub. If you really think this is still a stub, feel free to retag it. Vegaswikian 01:58, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Ok, so maybe you can get away with aerogram but I still think cover is a stub, but I will look at it again and see if I can add something to it. That is the point, You may be an official site though I can only find a single link to you on the official site and it says nothing about you being official or not BUT YOU are promoting you own site which actually has commercial products on it too. Anyway, people can find you from the official site. Wikipedia is not about advertising. As I suggested you should read the link about what should be linked and should not be linked. Besides which there is another editor who keeps substituting his festival site for your site in an edit war that should be stopped. The best way to avoid this edit war is to just have the one official website listed which is what Wikipedia guidelines suggest. Basically everything else is linkspam and has no place here. Stamps

I've just joined the philately project -great work on the Postage stamps of Ireland - this is a shining example of how an article should look -well done, - I would first of all like the main Philately article to be up to scratch -its terrible!!! then to start articles on all the entities. Then I'd like to see a full catalogue of stamps from each country but images but not only listing the stamps but providing information on each issue. It is a mammoth task but wikipedia has the potential to completely cover it all!!! I'd also like to see the Philately template sorted out to it incorporates WikiProject Philately articles - e.g stub-class- b-class etc. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ ^{"Expecting you" Contribs} 10:41, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the compliment on Postage stamps of Ireland. I will work on Postal history of Ireland when I get time, but the stamp article alone took me about 3 months to do, so I admire your guts, but, IMHO, you are just a little ambitious in your aspirations for the philatelic articles. you need to understand how many people are actually contributing to philatelic articles right now. Basically it is Stan and I, though George Williams seems to be around occasionally. BlackJack was doing some great work but got pissed off due to some non-philatelic issues and though he is around, on a WikiBreak right now, his philatelic, though not his cricket, contributions have virtually stopped.

Cataloguing all stamps is really a no go for many reasons that I can discuss later and I seem to recall there is such a project in-hand, somewhere else, but, again no real action. One of the main issues is image copyright and anyway, why bother, when there are perfectly good catalogues produced by Stanley Gibbons, Scott catalogue, Y&T, Michel, etc. Why reinvent the wheel, besides which sticky labels, sorry stamps, as such, don't really interest me greatly; postal history is my forte and has been for the last 20-25 years. Again you mentioned your ambitious aspirations on Stan's page but remember that, with about 10,000 new stamps worldwide each year, you would need an army of editors to do what you suggest, even if, like the stamp catalogue publishers you already had much of the info in a database, but we would be starting from scratch. We only seem to have 2 or 3 people doing any work at all. Besides which, which modern stamps are notable and therefore encyclopaedic? Not many.

A decent article about each stamp issuing entity would also be great and is more realistic. I have a few in mind that I know I can do, but they are really not possible without some decent knowledge of the topic, so I have not bothered to do any yet because I am concentrating on other things like my recent complete rewrite of Postal history, which, though I say it myself is pretty decent but still needs polishing, and new articles, both short and longer, on Letter sheet, Marcophily and others. I also co-operated with someone else on a rewrite of Pillar box. The next rewrite that I am considering doing and that I am gathering info for is Postage stamp, not Philately as you suggest. Postage stamp is the lead article for Stamp collecting, so I think that should be done first and maybe we could get it up to Good article status if it was really worked on.

I also saw your post on Stan's page about the Postage stamps and postal history of Abu Dhabi article and your note on adding an image to the Penny Blue page. Unfortunately this is not the correct image. This is the Penny Blue article , not the Two penny blue article, so I have reverted it. ww2censor 01:54, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

Yes, there is a wikibooks project - http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/World_Stamp_Catalogue and it would be more sensible to have a catalog there. By definition, an encyclopedia is a summarization of knowledge rather than the whole thing, so WP should include a high-level guide to the philately of each country, but not attempt to list each and every stamp issued. I guess I was a little over ambitious but yes by definition an encyclopedia is a summary but can you honestly say that wikipedia is a basic summary!!? It has an enormous amount on articles which cover some subjects to the extreme giving every bit of information possible. Perhaps covering every stamp is a bit ambitious, but I definately think each entity should have a detailed articless or articles like Ireland and some coverage of at least the issues -this should be our goal first surely -you can't knock me for wanting coverage to reach a high level. So I see Stan has chirped in with the Wikibooks info I could not remember. I agree with you that each stamp issuing entity should have a decent entry, but as I mentioned my work on the Ireland article took me 3 months AND I KNOW the subject, so anything of similar quality for other countries will take time especially if you don't have the reference material in your philatelic library, but it should still be done. I will consider staring at least a few of the redlinks (here, here and here) when I get some time and perhaps you and Stan can start some others. However, we should agree what we are working on so we don't duplicate anything.

For me the biggest issue is the lack of willing, and/or knowledgeable, philatelic editors. How can we fix this lack of manpower? I have seen people come, join the project and then contribute virtually nothing. It's a problem. BTW Ernst, I also took on maintaining the Philatelic Portal as that too had been left hanging around for months as a non-operational portal with lots of redlinks. Cheers & keep in touch. ww2censor

Hi I saw your above comment in Stamp album. I was wondering if Stock book required a new entry at all. As such here is nothing much to write about a stock book. What if it was made a part of stamp album. And maybe Stamp Album renamed as Stamp Storage Media or something? I was just about to leave you a message concering your images on the stamp album page when I saw this message had arrived. I cannot agree with you. Stamp albums are distinctly different from Stockbooks and it deserves its own page. I was going to try to gather the information to write a page soon and then transfer your images to that new page. However it seems you don't know enough about it to make a new page, so if you agree, I will write it as soon as I can. Template:Motorcycling

My edits to the template enable the use of {{WikiProjectBannerShell}}, which allows multiple WikiProject banners to be "nested" on a Talk page. See Talk:T. E. Lawrence for an example which includes {{Motorcycling}}; it's a great space-saver, but the banners are still accessible. And as you can see at Talk:Steve McQueen, the edits have no affect on the appearance of the template when {{WikiProjectBannerShell}} is not used. TAnthony 01:29, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Flags Icon and Sister Cities

Where exactly is it stated that flag icons should not be used in the context of sister cities. It does not say so here, Wikipedia:Don't overuse flags. After all, they are used in pretty much every other city's article for Sister Cities.

IIRC, starting some time in February this year there was a massive edit war over the flags in the sister cities section of the Dublin article. It was also talked about on the talk page and in the end it was determined that in order to avoid the edit war it was best to remove all flags from all sister cities. There were editors who kept changing the flags of individual cities to other flags than were originally there. A Catalonia flag was being inserted for the Spanish flag for Barcelona and an English flag kept being inserted for the UK flag for Liverpool. Start off looking at the edits from around this time. I am sure you have read the WP:FLAG page but it is not mandatory to use flags in this situation and maybe this is the appropriate quote from the Don't overuse flags page. Hope that helps. I would not bother removing flag icons from other articles. It was just that in the Dublin article it caused an edit war, but on many others there is no active problem. Philately project

Well I'm not completely inactive, though I have to admit that I haven't been pulling much weight in philately in the last few months. If I restore my blurb there, maybe I can encourage myself to do a little more work. While I encourage your efforts to have a featured article about stamps, Irish philately is not a speciality where I have too much experience, so I won't be a big help on that one. One suggestion: It would be nice if you could add illustrations of those two early watermarks on Irish stamps. Eclecticology 23:12, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

I am happy to hear you are still interested in helping out. While my speciality is Ireland, but postal history not stamps, I have been working on many other general philatelic topics. As far as I am concerned Postage stamps of Ireland is finished for now but I will try to add images of the watermarks you suggest. I just need to find them as I don't actually collect stamps per se. Other general topics are really needed and you can find many of them here. Philately and Airmail both need a complete rewrite. Actually I have just been in touch with a German translator who will assist in translating the German version of Airmail into English. My main reason for that is because it is a German Featured Article and we could do with some other candidates. I have not been idle having completely rewritten Postal history recently as well as initiated Letter sheet, so you will see that Ireland is not my only philatelic interest. ww2censor 03:18, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I see what you are doing and will do some work on it myself. Your references are not done properly to Wikipedia style but I will try to show you how to do that. Don't worry about the references - I just put the article up from my word file so it came out like that. they will be fine in the finished article. I will continue working on the file that I have on my hard drive and occasionally upload it. They setting of the article will be done once I have finished writing it.
