I'm puzzled by your actions at Irish Newfoundlanders which is on my watchlist. Take the sentence "As early as 1536, the ship Mighel (Michael) of Kinsale is recorded returning to her home port in Co. Cork with consignments of Newfoundland fish and cod liver oil" which appears in the 24 April 2005‎ creation of the article and also in this archived site. In Brian McGinn's article Newfoundland: The Most Irish Place Outside of Ireland, the sentence has a reference with a lengthy comment. Surely this didn't come from the unreferenced Wikipedia article? In fact I see that Brian McGill's article is given as an external link. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:16, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Ohhh I see. I restored the non-infringing content (the reason why it's +21k) and removed the copyvio in one go, so the edit looks different than a normal copyvio removal. :) Sennecaster (Chat) 21:50, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

In case you didn't know this, pages on protests and military conflicts that get major mainstream media attention tend to get quite a bit of 1-2 sentence copyright violations, often slightly paraphrased, especially in 'timeline' and 'reactions' sections, and generally nobody makes the effort to label these as copyvios or ask for help from copyright clerks. Either other editors don't notice, despite the added text sounding "newsy" and written independently of the surrounding context, or they notice but don't have the time (my case) or knowledge for copyvio labelling; in many cases they edit the copyvio'd text so it becomes more natural. Even after media attention lowers, these are still high risk cases. It might be worth it to think of some sort of bot help for these. The copyviolating editors (usually, but not always, IP editors) usually give the source, without realising that they're violating copyright, so a bot that checks the new content in these sections against the sources might strike a fair balance between extra cpu load and handling copyvios quickly.

A few key strings for suspicious text for someone who might want to write a bot are "the ([adjective]|) city", "the ([adjective]|) nation", "the ([adjective]|) country", "the ([adjective]|) kingdom" - mainstream media newsy style seems to forbid repeating a country/city name in the same or successive sentences. Obviously, these strings would only be a Bayesian clue. Automated analysis would probably find several key style aspects of BBC/NYT/Guardian/CNN/AJE/Reuters that don't quite sound right in an encyclopedia. Human verification by a native English speaker would almost certainly be needed, at least at the beginning. Boud (talk) 20:59, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

Large edits get screened through the TurnItIn API by User:EranBot and sent to the CopyPatrol interface, where there are more copyright editors, so that may cover the automated analyses. I'm afraid that what you describe is common across all types of articles, but especially popular BLPs :/.It's annoying to deal with, since a single sentence or two is not a problem. The discussion was open for at a minimum 7 days, which, on Wikipedia terms, is long enough for a census to be discussed, @Rice25kg. This can be frustrating, I understand! However, if the undeletion review shows that uninvolved admins agree with the closure, then there is nothing you can do. We work by a consensus, and in this case, a consensus has been decided. The correct process from hereon out would be to create or improve other articles, and only revisit Brian Malarkey if something in the future shows up that would help demonstrate notability for him. It's not majority decision though only one admin has commented to make the page a redirect to Top Chef: Miami and in my views and opinion its not what the wikipedia bureaucracy works. Hi @Iamvishal074! I checked the history of Ghirth and it is not semiprotected :) You should be free to edit it. However, I noticed that you have been reverted for removing well-sourced content; on Wikipedia we use reliable, independent sources that are separate, have editorial oversight, and/or have been written by experts on a subject matter. I would try to find things that the Wikipedia article does not have in the article already by reading books or articles from established publications. @Iamvishal074: I really don't edit in Indian areas too much, so I would direct questions about castes and such to a user such as Sitush (Sorry!). In terms of reliable sources; however, the best way to bring into question a source instead of indiscriminately removing information is to open a discussion on the talk page and explain exactly why you find the source to be unreliable, or how it contains false information, by providing other written sources that have underwent editorial oversight or have been written by experts on Ghirth. Hi I just joined as a member of Wikipedia to make a couple changes to my town's page. My edits to a page were reverted by someone and they sent me to aa "talk" page with a big long explanation about me possibly being a paid consultant or something. Hi @WHSarchivist! It seems you added an external link in one of your edits, which had caused a knee-jerk reaction from one of our anti-vandalism editors. This is fairly common for people who seem to show a relation to a certain organization or company. For some edits to be kept (such as the additions in the "Notable people" section), we require references to reliable sources that back up the claim being made. As for the link to Washington Rewind, we only allow certain pages to be linked to, and even then they should be at the "External links" section at the bottom of the page (perhaps you can just link to this on the WHS website instead of on Wikipedia). For the Washington Rewind to be included in the "History" section, we need a secondary source, such as a news publication or other substantial secondary source, that discusses that project.

I know you don't mean harm, so I've restored parts of the content which don't pose an issue, which contains the new link to the Washington Historical Society and the mention of the 9/11 Memorial Walk (which I had found coverage for). I suggest that you take a short trip through the simplified ruleset (a short collection of policies to keep in mind when editing) to make sure that your edits are of best quality so that they don't get reverted. If you think that some parts you're changing might be a bit too close to your volunteer work as part of the WHS, consider making a conflict of interest edit request so that an editor can help out with what can be added or what to improve. To get the other edits back, I recommend finding some adding citations to prove the added content.

• The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Hi Sebastian Pris! I noticed that some of the prose was copied from the book that wasn't inside quotes, and Wikipedia considers quotes to be a copyright violation if there is excessive material quoted. I saw that most of the content added was quoting, so I removed it. Aside from a copyright standpoint, it is much easier to comply with other editing guidelines if you write the ideas and main points of a source in your own words. Thank you for your quick reply! I still don't see where I didn't used inside quotes and I also don't think seven sentences is excessive. And I don't understand why the ratio between my text and the quotes should be important. I think what matters should be the absolute amount of text I quoted(As long as quotes are not the only content I contribute and the quotes are supporting my points). Also I think if I write the text without direct quotes, my claims would be challenged. Per our non-free content criteria, we must limit the amount of text quoted compared to the Wikipedia article, and not of the overall work. I think that if you rewrote it, it would be okay. Just beware of close paraphrasing too much, as Wikipedia also counts that as copyright violations (see more at Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing). A way to prevent your additions from being challenged is to include in-text citations using <ref></ref> tags with a citation at the end of your sentence or paragraph. If they do get challenged, feel free to discuss with the person on the talk page of the article in question, and see if you can come to an agreement :) Sennecaster (Chat) 17:41, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

@Villa Francesco: If you are being paid by Eric Dever, you must disclose it on your talk page (WP:PAID has more information). Wikipedia relies on secondary sources for notability, or how worthy a subject is for inclusion. It is also highly discouraged to write articles about yourself, and it is against common practices to edit articles that you have a conflict of interest with. If you do decide to go through with your decision, use WP:AFC for submitting articles and be completely honest about your status of being paid or any conflicts of interest. @Villa Francesco: I have checked some of your references, and they are not reliable per wikipedia's general agreement of sourcing. We require secondary news, such as news articles, third party museum pages, and art reviews, so sources such as personal correspondence are not accepted as a reliable source. Furthermore, we take sourcing very seriously when it concerns living people, as dictated on our biography of living persons policy. Every contentious statement has to be cited, whether positive, negative, or neutral in tone. As the reviewer said, a lot of claims need in-line citations in the draft. I did the reverse; I removed the text and left the sources. The diff shows the reference syntax moving upwards; it may be more clear in visual differences if you have that enabled. Diff reading gives me headaches too, no worries on the misunderstanding. CV does stand for copyvio, I started using it once I encountered cases where I would hit max character limit on my removals due to massive amounts of pasting. There are many lengthy quotations from the cited sources, almost to the point that the reader ends up incorporating them alongside the article text as they read the article. Is this permitted? @SPECIFICO I mostly see refquotes being used if the source is heavily paywalled or offline. I would follow the principles of normal quote usage with respect to NFC. WP:QUOTEFARM is probably the best guidance on this. However, these grounds tend to be much more shaky than a straight up copyright violation or close paraphrase, as anything to do with NFC and quotes is already a hot mess. CCI tends to remove or trim down such overquotes, but if you're in content dispute/discussion with someone I would seek outside review, like at WP:CP (list without blanking). In case you didn't know this, pages on protests and military conflicts that get major mainstream media attention tend to get quite a bit of 1-2 sentence copyright violations, often slightly paraphrased, especially in 'timeline' and 'reactions' sections, and generally nobody makes the effort to label these as copyvios or ask for help from copyright clerks. Either other editors don't notice, despite the added text sounding "newsy" and written independently of the surrounding context, or they notice but don't have the time (my case) or knowledge for copyvio labelling; in many cases they edit the copyvio'd text so it becomes more natural. Even after media attention lowers, these are still high risk cases. It might be worth it to think of some sort of bot help for these. The copyviolating editors (usually, but not always, IP editors) usually give the source, without realising that they're violating copyright, so a bot that checks the new content in these sections against the sources might strike a fair balance between extra cpu load and handling copyvios quickly.

A few key strings for suspicious text for someone who might want to write a bot are "the ([adjective]|) city", "the ([adjective]|) nation", "the ([adjective]|) country", "the ([adjective]|) kingdom" - mainstream media newsy style seems to forbid repeating a country/city name in the same or successive sentences. Obviously, these strings would only be a Bayesian clue. Automated analysis would probably find several key style aspects of BBC/NYT/Guardian/CNN/AJE/Reuters that don't quite sound right in an encyclopedia. Human verification by a native English speaker would almost certainly be needed, at least at the beginning. Boud (talk) 20:59, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

Large edits get screened through the TurnItIn API by User:EranBot and sent to the CopyPatrol interface, where there are more copyright editors, so that may cover the automated analyses. I'm afraid that what you describe is common across all types of articles, but especially popular BLPs :/.It's annoying to deal with, since a single sentence or two is not a problem. @PsyNtst For now, you can follow WP:BEBOLD and make changes that you see fit (within policy of course), and if you get reverted, continue discussing. 3Os can be requested if the discussion stalls out again; I declined partially because Binks gave a 3rd opinion as requested (typically, 3Os don't join in on full discussions and rather give an opinion to move it along) and partially because one of the people in dispute is blocked currently. You can notify the relevant wikiproject on the project's talk page as well, although some of them are very inactive now, and sometimes maintenance tags can help generate attention. Hope this helps! If it has no source for me to check and it's more complex than basic sentences, I usually presumptively remove it per WP:PDEL. I worked with Epicgenius over discord to really quickly rewrite what Martin added because it's a FA; as long as you don't restore what was previously there feel free to rewrite. Hi -- since I just learned that you're an expert on CCI and dealing with copyvio, I hope you don't mind if I ask you a question. I've rarely had to deal with copied text; I do a lot of FAC reviewing and a reviewer there is never the only one to spot a copyvio, and that sort of problem is extremely rare at FAC anyway. I've been going through my recently promoted GAs and doing manual spotchecks and running Earwig, since I realized I should have been doing that all along, and I have posted a couple of notes for nominators to clean things up. I just came across Hajji Ebrahim Shirazi; the nominator's prose is not good and I nearly failed it on that basis but ended up doing a fairly long review to get it over the line. Just now I ran Earwig and found multiple instances of short copied strings of text. I've left a note on the article's talk page about them. I still need to do the manual spotchecks. I left a question at WT:GAR about whether I should go straight to a reassessment, but I was wondering what you would typically do if you found copyvio like this in a GA. Would you immediately rip it out the relevant strings and enough associated text to leave coherent sentences? Or just leave a note as I have done and watch the page? And in a case like this where there are many non-English sources I can't assess, what level of AGF would you apply to those sources? Thanks for any feedback; I don't really want to be a copyvio expert but if I going to do many more GAN reviews I can see I'll need to be. Oooh boy GA and FA copyvio, there's a lot of nuance here. I've never reviewed a GAN or a FAC, so some things may seem a bit wrong on my end; just try to combine the knowledge :). I don't mind copyright questions, feel free to throw more my way.

If you're reviewing and haven't passed it yet, quickfail for copyvio and either remove it, or if the editor is very responsive, have them remove it. If it's like 1-2 sentences, I wouldn't quickfail since that can be solved with skillful rewrites--I wouldn't fail a DYK for 1-2 sentences. Short strings of copied text can be indications of close paraphrasing; that's why Earwig's detector is fallible, and then you need to manually compare text to text. Same with books; usually those need to be opened and searched within if you can.

For the AGF question, honestly, it really depends. AGF is thrown out the window if the user is blocked for copyvio, but in other cases, we tend to just AGF if the source isn't reasonably accessible to the reviewer. I use machine translators to deal with non-english web sources, and pass off book sources if I can, but if I can't access the source I AGF. If the text is suspect of copying (more sophisticated than the rest of the prose, uses more sensational language, for instance) then I would try to reach out to other editors to help review.

If it's a recent GA, I would probably try to rewrite it unless it's beyond a couple sentences, then I would remove and place {{cclean}} on the talk page. I'm a little bit less hesitant/cautious if it's one of those "listed in 2009, editor is indeffed for socking" cases since it probably deserves a reassessment anyways. If it's extremely blatant and covers whole sections, I'd either straight up remove with no warning or list it at copyproblems. I think that you've entered a really tricky part of copyright expertise, and it's beyond what I expect of most users to have to learn, but it's unfortunately necessary in this case. This particular case is awkward because I'm the one that promoted it so I feel responsible -- as I said I'm going back through my own GA reviews to do the spotchecks I should have done first time. So it's already passed, and I can't quickfail.

I think I will try the machine translation for the spotchecks and just hope the nominator is responsive. However, his English is terrible so I have little hope his rewrites will be good enough; I may have to help him out. (talk page stalker) @Mike Christie: I've removed copyvios from existing GAs before, and my approach is to rewrite if the article is otherwise up to par, and consider GAR if it isn't. This is especially the case if the user was generally otherwise competent and acting in good faith. I find it keeps feathers unruffled to replace as we destroy. As for media you can't access, I'm of a mind with Sennecaster: if an editor doesn't give you reason to assume bad faith, assume good faith and move on. This approach wouldn't fly at FAC of course, but by then there are hopefully people with the means to extend access or access those sources themselves and test for verification. I'll finish by noting that a field of investigatory and clean up work closely related to Wikipedia is verification, and removing fake sources or prose/citations that fail verification. I have been holding off on rechecking the articles of Doug's I reviewed at GAN until the ANI thread completed. It looks like that thread has finally shut down. @Mike Christie I'm not exactly sure; I think that myself and a few others want to survey through DC's contributions to make sure that this isn't just a 2022 issue before we request a full expansion. I think MER-C went and surveyed all of the creations/GAs on the subpage, so we might be working off of those. We have various ways of accessing offline sources; Google book snippet searching, archive.org, and TWL aid us immensely. There haven't been many sources where I've been completely unable to access so far. I will say that I have seen non-trivial amounts of source verification failures in articles I've checked, so a deeper review of the articles may be needed. Contentious topics procedure adopted

The Arbitration Committee has concluded the 2021-22 review of the contentious topics system (formerly known as discretionary sanctions), and its final decision is viewable at the revision process page. As part of the review process, the Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:

The above proposals that are supported by an absolute majority of unrecused active arbitrators are hereby enacted. The drafting arbitrators (CaptainEek, L235, and Wugapodes) are directed to take the actions necessary to bring the proposals enacted by this motion into effect, including by amending the procedures at WP:AC/P and WP:AC/DS. The authority granted to the drafting arbitrators by this motion expires one month after enactment.

The Arbitration Committee thanks all those who have participated in the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process and all who have helped bring it to a successful conclusion. This motion concludes the 2021-22 discretionary sanctions review process.

This motion initiates a one-month implementation period for the updates to the contentious topics system. The Arbitration Committee will announce when the initial implementation of the Committee's decision has concluded and the amendments made by the drafting arbitrators in accordance with the Committee's decision take effect. Any editors interested in the implementation process are invited to assist at the implementation talk page, and editors interested in updates may subscribe to the update list.

2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

Copyvio/sock content

Hi, Sennecaster! First of all, a big +1 to the comment above, and a big thank you for your valuable contributions in this area. I happened to have started looking at this mess before your edit there (for which thank you!), and I'm not entirely sure that more isn't needed. That particular content was added here, but the editor made a number of edits to the page and I'm inclined to think that anything that remains of any of those edits should simply be removed – either presumptively because we've already verified one copyvio, or on the grounds of sockpuppetry. @Justlettersandnumbers: I think any presumptive removal on that article would be shaky; there's not as much of a clear cut case of copyvio pdel as on a CCI, and some people already don't like BANREVERT for sockpuppetry. Judging by the edit history trainwreck, it's already a somewhat contentious article, which is my main concern for PDEL. I think we could go for it if it's not too much content, but if it's a Hathorn level of content removal it might get dicey on justifying it. Sennecaster (Chat) 03:34, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

POV Discussion involving copyright

Weighing in on the deletion of over 30 seasons worth of episode synopsis, a number of which were original to wikipedia making the page of this foundational documentary series much less useful to users seems a bit overkill? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_POV_episodes -- especially as some of the synopsis, a quick spot check for example of the Fast Food Women entry would appear that all subsequent text on the internet was pulled from Wikipedia? what's the most efficient way to get these synopsis back and in accordance with Wikipedia copyright policy? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.80.129.173 (talk) 21:25, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

I would rewrite the content. I didn't notice the issue first; Diannaa did and according to her listing, there was a foundational problem with all of the plot summaries. I just happened to be the unlucky one that sacred on it. There's no quick or easy way. Each plot summary has to be individually checked via a Google search to see if it was already extant online somewhere (most likely at the PBS website) at the time it was added to Wikipedia. — Diannaa (talk) 19:54, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

At least 1-7 is directly copied from PBS; cited in the edit added and everything. Povdocs added all of the copied content. I'm using WIkiBlame and the PBS POV archive sites; if a source is cited in its insertion, I am presuming itcame first. I'll keep checking when I have time, but I stopped at season 8 when I found close paraphrasing that was added after the original (which was completely fine copyright wise).Sennecaster (Chat) 01:48, 5 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello! Based on your feedback and suggestions, I will fill out Season 35 of POV by paraphrasing the synopses and citing the PBS website for each films using reference tags.
