Happy New Year, and welcome to a special double issue of Books & Bytes. We've included a retrospective on the changes and progress TWL has seen over the last year, the results of the survey TWL participants completed in December, some of our plans for the future, a second interview with a Wiki Love Libraries coordinator, and more. Here's to 2014 being a year of expansion and innovation for TWL!
The Wikipedia Library completed the first 6 months of its Individual Engagement grant last week. Here's where we are and what we've done:
Increased access to sources: 1500 editors signed up for 3700 free accounts, individually worth over $500,000, with usage increases of 400-600%
Deep networking: Built relationships with Credo, HighBeam, Questia, JSTOR, Cochrane, LexisNexis, EBSCO, New York Times, and OCLC
New pilot projects: Started the Wikipedia Visiting Scholar project to empower university-affiliated Wikipedia researchers
Developed community: Created portal connecting 250 newsletter recipients, 30 library members, 3 volunteer coordinators, and 2 part-time contractors
Tech scoped: Spec'd out a reference tool for linking to full-text sources and established a basis for OAuth integration
Broad outreach: Wrote a feature article for Library Journal's The Digital Shift; presenting at the American Library Association annual meeting
Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 10,842 last month to 10,844 on December 14th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 108 is ahead of WP:GM who have 81. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 57 out of a total number of 3,300 articles.
Currently we have thirty one Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.

The January 2014 articles selected below are an editor choice as there were no further suggestions from the project talk page.
The project is subscribed to a clean-up listing which lists articles tagged with various clean-up tags that need attention. The listing is refreshed by a bot on a regular basis.
Monitoring is essential Use the watchlist to keep an eye on changes to the project's articles so that vandalism and spamming can be removed as quickly as possible.
Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR. You will also have to check that the Commons link is set correctly.

Disambiguation link notification for February 11
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Wheelock & Sandbach railway station, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Wheelock (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
Helen Skelton does not hold any world records. She may hold Guinness records but they are not the same thing. It is therefore not wrong to remove the part of her article claiming she holds world records, but it is however wrong to revert correct edits because they come from an unregistered user. ASSUME GOOD FAITH. If you want to reword the part of the article to indicate that she merely holds Guinness records then that would be the right thing to do.
Anyone could publish their own list of records, but it wouldn't mean they hold a world record. I'll demonstrate that here with my personal list of records:
1. Fastest 100m Sprint: Me with 61.875 seconds. I was eating a kebab at the time and didn't want to drop it, but I still managed to set the record. My list does not recognise the legitimacy of Mr Usain Bolt or indeed any other human being on the planet.
2. Individual with the greatest number of lifetime sexual partners. Me with 4 (and a half). Real proud of that one.
3. Heaviest object lifted by man. Me and my friend (joint) with one side each of a 2 seat sofa. We moved this from one room to the other recently and I swear it must be at least twice as heavy as anything those strong men have to carry.
4. Wikipedia admin with the worst understanding of Wikipedia policy and therefore most likely to lose admin rights in the near future: MilborneOne & Nthep (JOINT)
I'll leave it to you to go edit any articles to include these new records.
This is nothing to do with AGF and you editing from an IP account - I have no problem with unregistered accounts - but you're reopening a discussion without apparently reading Talk:Helen Skelton where this has been discussed at length. There's a very genuine discussion to be had about what constitutes a world record but the article on Helen Skelton is not the place to do it. Nthep (talk) 22:05, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
I have read the talk page. Nobody disputes that she may hold Guinness records, but she does not hold world records. Presumably because you think any old unofficial record constitutes a world record you would support the editing of Men's_100_metres_world_record_progression article to include my world record? Having seen your edit history for the Skelton article it is pretty clear you think you own it and have an obsession with the girl. You can edit her article as many times as you like but she's unlikely to ever know who you are much less sleep with you. Give it up. 81.152.153.94 (talk) 22:12, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
I'll ignore your lack of AGF and personal insult and instead deal with the point in question. GWR have criteria for defining their records, I think some of them are extremely dubious - see the article and the discussion about the kite-skiing record, awarding it solely because no else has submitted a claim for a particular set of circumstances? - but they doesn't mean it should be denied that she that it was awarded it. Outside well known organised sports like athletics, GWR are assumed by many people to be 'official' world records and in the absence of a body to decide otherwise that view will continue to prevail; perhaps wrongly, perhaps rightly. I've already stated my scepticism about the validity of some but like boxing there are areas where there are multiple ways of defining world record holder. Nthep (talk) 22:38, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
I just want to make sure that you realise the part I edited out said she holds a world record, not that she holds a Guinness World Record. It's precisely because many GWRs are so dubious that it's important to make that distinction. As you have said outside of well organised sports GWR might be assumed by some to be the 'official' record, but as we can see especially clearly in this case that it is wrong wrong. When there is so much evidence that her record times are not only not records but not even remarkable surely editors can come to a consensus to not refer to them simply as world records for the article. Any other dubious claim included in an article would be given a certain level of scrutiny that this has yet to see. 81.152.153.94 (talk) 22:51, 16 February 2014 (UTC)
I accept part of what you say - the bit I don't accept is that GWR can't be the 'official' record. This is where we get into boxing terrain where two or more bodies hand out titles/records. Unfortunately in a lot of areas, including long distance canoeing and kite-skiing there isn't a widely recognised body that governs the sport worldwide (by widely recognsed here I'm talking about familiarity in public, not standing within the sport), and therefore GWR are seen as 'official' world records or at least as 'official' as anything any other body wants to say on the subject. Why or how GWR have acquired this status isn't a discussion for here or in the article on Helen Skelton so we need to find some sort of compromise. How about we just change the wording at the end of the lead paragraph to say "making her a double Guinness world record holder"? Nthep (talk) 09:34, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

That template only checks the 10 most recent days, so if the backlog is greater than that, the additional days won't display. You can find all days by following the links to the categories in the {{CSD backlogs}} template. --Stefan2 (talk) 16:14, 1 March 2014 (UTC)
The image Westinghouse_Solitude.jpg was deleted today by someone named Ronhjones. I had an email exchange with him about it, since the image has been posted for several months after you had flagged it as being possibly out of PD. He recommended contacting you again. I gave you the reasons why we ought to consider it safe to post (repeated below) last fall, and you seemed to agree since the image stayed posted. Can you please restore it now?

Another message related to discussion posted last fall states:
"Earliest publication date is 2006. If this correct then photo is only PD if created prior to 1893 and best estimate is about 1890. NtheP (talk) 19:25, 25 November 2013 (UTC)"
This image was created by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette newspaper from an old photograph in their archives. They published it as part of an article in 2006 (referenced on the wikipage). Upon inquiry, I learned that they do not claim copyright to the image, nor do they know (or care about) the exact provenance of the photograph, hence I used it as part of the wikipage for Westinghouse Park. From the historical context of the image, it appears to be from *about* 1890, which would seem to put it safely in the PD domain, which for this photograph would be 1893. Hence I would ask that this image be restored to the article.

It was put up for deletion 5 days after you uploaded it. It has sat with a deletion notice for some 3 months - it should be 7 days - but there is a backlog, and we like to try to get more input if possible.
As an uninvolved admin, I closed the discussion based on the data that was there - if you want it restored then there will have to be a fresh discussion between yourself and the nominator, at the very least - you choices are

I wasn't disputing whether or not the image had a fair use rationale- it does not have an a copyright license, which is why it was tagged for deletion. That said, the rationale is not for the article in which the image is actually used, where it clearly fails NFCC#8 anyway. I'm not really sure what is gained by not deleting the image at this time, as it's clearly going to end up deleted anyway... J Milburn (talk) 10:32, 1 May 2014 (UTC)
