News and notes: One decade of Wikisource; FDC recommendations raise serious questions

The sister project Wikisource, the digital library that hosts free-content primary sources, is now a decade old. Wikisource, which now has versions in 63 languages, is the sixth type of project to reach ten-year milestone and will be the last until 2016. The Wikimedia Foundation's volunteer Funds Dissemination Committee has published its recommendations to the Board of Trustees on 11 new applications for annual grants by 11 WMF-affiliated organisations. The maximum total budget for the current and upcoming March rounds is US$6M.

WikiProject report: Electronic Apple Pie

This week, we returned to WikiProject Apple Inc. for a peek at their newest articles about the latest in gadgets and software. The last time we took a bite out of WikiProject Apple, they had just finished merging WikiProject Macintosh and WikiProject iPhone OS. Hi, Despite the third view suggestion, this user continue edit warring on Madai. Just look at "View history" Iranzamin-Iranzamin (talk) 11:21, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

He also is arguing with others too. And his friend(one IP) wrote comments on Madai-talk page to support him. He forced others to accept his views and if not, he complains them for 3RR. The article has been relatively quiet for years with no major edit wars, but in the past month a slew of editors have shown up each with a different issue, so the talkpage may be a little confusing. The issue that Iranzamin-Iranzamin and I need a third opinion on is the mention of scholars who have suggested a link between Madai and Mitanni. The discussion has been sidetracked in every possible way, but what it boils down to is that there are numerous references establishing that such a link has indeed been discussed in scholarship, including one that was referenced in the article and two others I added somewhere on the talk page. Iranzamin-Iranzamin is synthesizing rebuttals to these scholars' point-of-view by endeavouring to show why he thinks it would be impossible for the Mitanni to be descendants of Madai. He is missing the point of the article; in fact it has never been proven one way or the other whether anyone is descended from Madai or indeed if this was a historical figure at all. It turns out the article was apparently under a coordinated sock attack according to the SPI and they were all blocked, even though weirdly enough at the last minute I-I agreed to a "compromise" that basically was 100% my position all along. When one edits this page for too long, one is tempted to appoint oneself as the psychoanalyst for the human race, or at least the English-speaking portion thereof. Since nearly everyone uses Wikipedia, the constant stream of TV updates, pointless celebrity scandals, and inquiries after who has died can seem like a dreary peek into humanity's surprisingly banal collective consciousness.

Ok, so here's how the story goes:

When the article Thuppakki was nominated for GA, there was a section named "Controversies" which was not questioned or opposed by the reviewer and the article passed the GA review. However, User Red Pen of Doom kept opposing the section, saying it violated WP:MOS. Later, he moved all content from it to various sections of the article (basically "Marketing" and "Reception") where they did not seem to fit. I tried my best to stop his activities, but lost the war to him when he was supported by User Hell in a Bucket. From this point, the Red Pen has officially become my worst enemy on Wikipedia. Humiliated at my defeat, I finally removed all the controversy-related statements in the article and pasted them in a new article titled Controversial issues surrounding Thuppakki.

A little more than six days after the close of voting, the results of the annual Arbitration Committee (ArbCom) elections have been announced. Of the 22 candidates, 13 managed to gain more supports than opposes, though only one gained the support of more than half of the voters. Eight were elected to two-year terms, and a ninth will serve for one year.

Technology report: Introducing the GLAMWikiToolset

This week, the GLAMWikiToolset, or GWToolset, is being deployed to the Wikimedia Commons. It allows for GLAM organizations to batch upload content based on various metadata stored in an XML schema. In the past this has been done by various bots, but now it will be easier for GLAMs to do it directly.

Regarding the Alfonzo Green AE case...

Hi Georgewilliamherbert, regarding my closure here of the AE case regarding Alfonzo Green, it was brought to my attention that perhaps enough time wasn't given for further consideration of Alfonzo's comments due to the holiday yesterday. Did you have any intent on making a substantive change in your position regarding that case after Alfonzo's comments and before my closure? Please let me know if so... Thanks. Go for it!

Go ahead and fix it, I just didn't like the way the wording was (Notes:, etc). But if I'm not mistaken, with the exception of the W not necessarily being a B and vice versa, the other examples tend to be one-offs, no? IE, you might have a B77 without a W77, or a W81 without a B81, but if you have *both* then they will be the B and W except in specific cases. Is that not correct? We saved one last special report for 2013. After our well-received review of great WikiProject logos a couple years ago, it was only a matter of time before we collected a new batch of interesting iconography that showcases the creativity of the Wikipedia community. Hopefully, these logos will also inspire other projects to liven up their drab pages.
