– I see the problem. I updated the fac run, but had switch the processing to the ArticleHistory module. Moved the code there, updated fac run. Should be good now. Hawkeye7(discuss)22:44, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
Hawkeye7 Thanks! Was the bot stalled? The Chew Valley FAR has not been processed, while FACs closed after it have. (Trying to give Mike Christie timeline info he needed all day ... promise to revisit logistics tomorrow ... fell behind.) SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:47, 30 December 2020 (UTC)
FAC and FAR are separate runs, and run at different times. I think Chew Valley just missed the last run. I ordered the Bot to run again, and it processed the article. Hawkeye7(discuss)00:14, 31 December 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I had the new version sitting in a side file waiting for the New Year. I put it up a little while ago, and it should update the unreviewed list from now on. [1]Hawkeye7(discuss)01:09, 2 January 2021 (UTC)
Don't worry about monitoring it yourself, as the problem is that the rest of January is new FAs, so there's nothing to monitor until Feb is scheduled ... I have reminders to self to check, and will let you know. :) Best, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:41, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
The Bot reported an error: far: unable to edit 'Belarus' (3) : protectedpage: This page has been protected to prevent editing or other actions. FACBot was trying to remove the "featured article" star from the article page. It is not a WP:ADMINBOT, so it runs unprivileged and was therefore unable to edit the WP:BLUELOCK protected page. I have edited the article to remove the {{featured article}} template. [5] The FACBot was restarted and processed the other four articles. I could get it to recognise this particular error and proceed with processing the other articles, but otherwise the problem will recur. Hawkeye7(discuss)02:45, 17 January 2021 (UTC)
Hawkeye7 I corrected them all, but you might want to step back through all the edits to sort the various errors. (It didn't actually "wreck the talk page"; it just got the wrong current status, and for some reason, the GA was listed twice.) Most of the errors on the page pre-dated FACbot. FACbot’s only error was the current status. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 00:16, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
It obliterated the fact that "Suzanne Lenglen has been listed as a level-4 vital article" and that it was a "Former featured article." When I found it, it was wrecked. They may have been formatted incorrectly, but they showed on my screen correctly until the bot error. Fyunck(click) (talk) 01:19, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
The vital article (just a WikiProject) was there (although oddly at the top of the page instead of with the rest of the WikiProjects): [6] As was everything else, if you just clicked the show button on milestones. The only error was the wrong current status, and the duplicate GA was pre-existing (not FACbot fault). I suspect this is the first time FACbot has encountered an FFA/GA, so that needs adjustment. Fyunck, if you have a look at Template:Article history, you'll see how easy it is for anyone to fix article milestone errors! Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:26, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
– When an editor has incorrectly added the GAN to the article history but not removed the template, the FACBot will now detect this sitiuation and remove the template. Hawkeye7(discuss)04:10, 29 January 2021 (UTC)
Congratulations message for successful FC nominations
I find it a bit odd that we have a congratulatory talk page message for e.g. DYKs but not successful featured content nominations. I designed one at {{FC pass talk message}}, and I was wondering if it'd be possible to get the FACbot to add it to the nominator's talk page as part of its work? It'd make the process a bit less anticlimactic haha. Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}}talk06:12, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
It wasn't clear to me what all the correct statuses are; the documentation does not cover this. The relevant code now reads:
# Update the current statusmy$currentstatus=$article_history->get('currentstatus')//'';my$newstatus={'FFA'=>'FFA','FFA/GA'=>'FFA/GA','FFAC'=>'FFAC','FFAC/GA'=>'FFAC/GA','GA'=>'FFAC/GA',};my$status=$newstatus->{$currentstatus}//'FFAC';$article_history->add('currentstatus'=>"$status\n");
The DYK entry was in error. According to Template:DYK talk, the date is the second parameter and the third is for an image. The article used an old form, with the third parameter containing part of the date. Hawkeye7(discuss)05:45, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Hawkeye7, just to let you know I have updated some parameters that are used for old peer reviews (in particular, an automatically included ID of the page revision, and also either a full link to the peer review page or the name of the article when it was reviewed - in case of a move). You can see the new parameters that I've included at Template:Old peer review/doc.
I mention this because I am contemplating asking you to run the bot on the 13,500 or so articles at Category:Old requests for peer review with a view to reducing template clutter so that old peer reviews can be integrated into the article history template where possible. Tom (LT) (talk) 02:14, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
Bit of weirdness: Nikkimaria closed 5 FARs yesterday[10] and 1 has been processed by the bot but the other 4 haven't been. DrKay (talk) 06:58, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Hawkeye! I forget if I've already mentioned this somewhere else, but as a follow-up to here, would it be possible for the bot to also deliver notices after successful featured list nominations? {{u|Sdkb}}talk23:20, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
@Hawkeye7 – Firstly, this is an excellent idea, which I was wondering for a long time. Now, I saw this on ChrisTheDude's talk page, but the message says "article" and "you may nominate it to appear on the Main page as Today's featured article" instead of list. Can this be corrected? Thanks! – Kavyansh.Singh (talk) 08:31, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
Just did my first promotions since this change and saw this; thanks for implementing this, Hawkeye7, and thanks for suggesting it, Sdkb! A bit of congratulations for all the work getting an FL takes is a nice addition. --PresN02:24, 17 October 2021 (UTC)
Yeah, that's the one Gog—god knows how I managed to miss that! But It stil seems that I've never received it, and I don't think I've got a 'no bots' thing running. ——Serial12:59, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
According to MOS:ORDER, {{Featured article}} should be at the top of the article, after Short description and Hatnote templates. The relevant RfC was closed in May. However, FACBot places these templates at the end of the article. Can this be fixed? I would also love to see the template name capitalized, but that is only a personal preference. Regards, IceWelder [✉] 12:15, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
It was placing the template down the bottom where the MOS specified it should be located; the MOS was changed to move it up higher. It's a bit more work for the Bot, but it can be done. I'll report back here when it is implemented. Hawkeye7(discuss)19:27, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
This has now been implemented. The code is as below. Note that this only affects featured articles and lists; good articles are not handled by the FACBot. (Also: the "F" has now been capitalised.)
I just noticed that the bot's FA template placement was really off in this edit. That edit is from August, mind you, so it might already be fixed. I just wanted to make sure that this was seen and confirmed. IceWelder [✉] 08:16, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
Bot placing FACs out of order
Hi, in this edit the bot placed the Leonardo di Caprio FAC in the wrong place—after all other FACs even though it's not the oldest. Is there some text in the FAC that's confusing the bot? I've moved it to the correct place, but will it get messed up again in the next update? Thanks, (t · c) buidhe07:59, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
This made the Bot think it was a redirect, and it loaded Leonardo da Vinci instead. The date was therefore 2006, making it the oldest nomination. I have removed this line, and it should be fine from now on. Hawkeye7(discuss)10:06, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
I could implement a fix to make the Bot ignore stuff in the nowiki tags, but don't think this occurs often enough to make it worthwhile. Hawkeye7(discuss)20:11, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
@Hawkeye7: When FACBot adds a list of recently featured articles to each TFA that contains a language template, the result is an error. For instance: my article has an Italian language-template in the lede title (as well as on the TFA) and is scheduled for TFA on April 18, 2022. The issue is that the bot gets confused by the template; see the April 19th TFA, the April 20th TFA, and the April 21th TFA. I hope this can be promptly fixed. Cheers - Wretchskull (talk) 12:44, 7 March 2022 (UTC)
@TFA coordinators The Bot doesn't look in the lead of the article - it only looks at the TFA page. (ie [12]). I have instructed the FACBot in how to handle the {{lang}} template, and you can use it in the TFA pages from now on. Hawkeye7(discuss)00:08, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
Hawkeye7 Thanks for that. I had to fix the TFA recentlist manually, and remove the lang template to prevent the error occurring again on the next bot pass. I guess Wretchskull can replace the lang template now Jimfbleak - talk to me?11:29, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
What does the bot use to identify where to update this page? I'm intending to move it over to CSS Grid / more flexy / media query-ey and I don't want to mess with the bot. Izno (talk) 23:07, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
There are two of them, for Featured Articles and Featured Lists. For the former, it looks for the comment
<!-- Articles ((\d+), most recent first) -->
and puts the new article after it. It then reads until it finds the comment:
<!-- Topics ((\d+), most recent first) -->
The number of articles to list is controlled by the regular expression. If it would be exceeded, then the last one will be dropped.
The Featured list processing works the same way, but looks for "Lists" and "Pictures" instead.
Hi Hawkeye, the bot doesn't seem to have closed this withdrawn nom although I can't see anything obvious like a change of article name mid-review or some such. OTOH the nominator had themselves removed the FAC template from the article talk page before I performed the archive -- that screw up the works...? Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 18:33, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
Hello. I closed 8 FARs yesterday but the bot has only recognized 2 of the closures. Did I forget a step? Thanks, DrKay (talk) 07:48, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Someone created a bad entry for Borat. I have removed it. It shouldn't have stopped the job from processing the others, but there is a problem with Kubernetes. Not sure how to fix it. The others have been processed now. Hawkeye7(discuss)08:45, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
Yes, if an article gets swapped out it must be processed manually. It used to be unheard of, but it has happened a bit lately. It is quite a challenge for the bot to recognise that this has happened; it starts with the schedule, and if an article slips off the schedule, then the bot doesn't know about it any more. But it is also difficult to process manually. So I will consider how it can be done. Hawkeye7(discuss)02:04, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
Wehwalt, yes, the URFA/2020 cutoff is 2015. I have always hoped that by keeping the TFA dates in the sortable charts, it will be easier for all of you to locate "Satisfactory" or "Kept" old FAs for TFA purposes. On a separate followup on Bengali language movement, pls see here. I had a rather dreadful November through December, and wish I had checked that article's history more closely, but don't want the wrong impression left about Antoine's review. Jimfbleak I recall there being another swap last month, that ended up at ERRORS, but I don't remember the article; if you can remember, I'd like to check that the URFA pages get updated. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 11:02, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
@SandyGeorgia:: Facbot missed a Failed GA here[15] The FACBot never had any instructions to deal with the {{Failed GA}} template. I have added instructions to handle it. While I was at it I also added instructions to place the {{ArticleHistory}} template after the talk, attention, guideline and language templates per WP:TALKORDER. Hawkeye7(discuss)04:31, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
Yes. Thank you. This hasn't happened for a long time. The easiest way would have been to undelete the article, run the Bot, and then delete it again. But I am not an admin, and cannot do that. Hawkeye7(discuss)21:43, 15 July 2023 (UTC)
Hi Hawkeye. I hope you don't mind me bothering you with this. Sarcophagus of Eshmunazar II has just been promoted to FAC. It was a joint nomination by two editors. Elias Ziade was duly notified - [16]. But Onceinawhile wasn't. I also note only one credit at Wikipedia:Featured articles promoted in 2023. Any ideas as to what went wrong? Or, more to the point, how to fix it? I am quite happy to "hand correct" this one, but it seemed worth checking to see what was causing it. Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 00:16, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
Fixed@Gog the Mild: Okay. The problem is related to this change in September 2022. By altering the format of the nomination statement, the FACBot was unable to find the nominator(s). Nobody has noticed until now because the FACBot has a fallback: it goes through the nomination history and locates the creator. This only works when there is one nominator, but it is frequently the case. I have instructed the FACBot in how to identify the new format, and the problem should not recur. (NB: Wikipedia:Featured articles promoted in 2023 is not maintained by the FACBot.) Hawkeye7(discuss)00:09, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for that, much appreciated. Hmm, Featured articles promoted in 2023 is not maintained by hand so I wonder how it happens? It does hiccup occasionally so I am used to keeping and eye on it and tidying up. Thanks again. Gog the Mild (talk) 00:15, 11 September 2023 (UTC)
@Hawkeye7: FACBot posted this, despite the fact that the page contains {{nobots}}. Just letting you know FYI, as the BRFA says that it should be exclusion compliant.
Hey Hawkeye7, the bot does not seem to have processed any FACs since May 24, even though multiple nominations have been promoted and archived. This one was archived manually a few days ago, but the others are still pending. Is this normal behavior, or does the bot need a drop of motor oil? (@FAC coordinators: Courtesy ping.) —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 19:21, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
The problem is that the Bot has instructions to put the featured list template after the hatnotes, and there is a For hatnote at that point. Will need some more logic. Hawkeye7(discuss)05:57, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
About a janky talk page change
@Hawkeye7: Hello again! In this edit, the bot mistakenly changed the |class= parameter of an unrelated template in a user's comment along with the banner shell class, which you may want to look into. Thanks! —TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 00:39, 3 June 2024 (UTC)

00:06:33 Sun 09 Jun 2024 Battle of Plum Point Bend: Updating the talk page
All I can think of is that there was a network problem, and the bot was unable to retrieve the FAC nomination page. The bot checks that the nomination was created over five days before, but cannot access results on previous days. For now, I am going to remove this check. Hawkeye7(discuss)04:19, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
It is hard making bots foolproof when the fools are so clever. The {{featured article candidates}} template was placed inside the {{WikiProject banner shell}}, so the bot could not find it to remove it. I have corrected the talk and archive pages, and added a check for this situation, so it can be handled manually. If it recurs, I will instruct the Bot on the correct procedure for handling the situation. Hawkeye7(discuss)21:24, 21 June 2024 (UTC)
It could be an issue because {{Italic title}} is present. The space seems to get added with every promotion, but I haven't seen it show up in the actual text of any other type of featured list. Sgubaldo (talk) 13:37, 9 June 2024 (UTC)
Hey Hawkeye7, we just added a new FL delegate, Hey man im josh. The ancient closing instructions imply that the bot only closes nominations correctly if the template is placed on the nomination by a coordinator it recognizes. I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, then there's a new authorized closer at FLC it should know about. Also, thanks for all this bot does for us! --PresN14:57, 1 July 2024 (UTC)
Hey Hawkeye7, looks like FACBot hasn't closed anything at FLC or FAC since the 22nd. Don't know about FAC, but I promoted 4 lists (example) on the 24th, and it's run a couple times since then without doing any closes. --PresN00:48, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
Actually, looking at the above, on the 22nd the @FLC and @FAC templates got modified slightly (diff); don't know if that's at all related. --PresN00:49, 27 July 2024 (UTC)
Yes, please. For some reason an editor took it upon himself to process the talk page manually.[17] The bot will not handle the nomination if it believes that it is being manually processed. I have reverted this change, and the bot has processed it.[18]Hawkeye7(discuss)21:36, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
@Mike Christie: The bot does not notify me unless there is an error. It is logged, but nowadays I seldom check the logs unless something is reported. I may tell the bot how to detect it and notify me. Hawkeye7(discuss)23:52, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
