Hi EncMstr.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

You elected to block block User:Cliff1911 on October 7, 2016

• with no escalating levels of warning
• when the editor had done, quite literally, nothing wrong
• with the result that this productive editor has left the project

so I would call that a trifecta. I would recommend in the future that you read WP:HURTS before taking actions which have the effect of removing good editors (Master Editor, 3 barnstars) from the project.

Your block reason was "You have been blocked temporarily from editing for unexplained deletions on Bend of the River, and multi-years of ignoring requests to include edit summaries."

Taking the first, the editors only edit to Bend of the River was this one, and it's a perfectly fine edit -- not only not a blockable offense, but not an offense of any kind, by any stretch.

The editor removed unsourced material which was idiosyncratic. All, or almost all, of the many film articles I have seen list cast members either as "Joe Smith" or "Joe Smith, as Pinckney Pruddle", not as "Joe Smith as Pinckney Pruddle, an itinerant pinboy". There's nothing necessarily wrong with the latter form -- our articles differ in the way the handle details like this, and fine -- but it's certainly not a requirement to include a description of the character's role or profession. As I say, most (I would even say practically all) of our movie articles don't.

So to block an editor for removing this material, especially considering that it is unsourced -- don't do stuff like that. Are you in the habit of doing stuff like this? If so, please stop. If you are frustrated that the editor did not summarize his edit, well too bad, because I can summarize it for you by clear and obvious inference: "Remove unsourced extraneous material, we do not generally include role characterizations in cast lists". You should have been able to easily infer this motive for the edit and if you are unable to so it does not speak well of your acuity, to be honest.

By the way you could have simply and legitimately reverted the edit per WP:BRD. This would have been the correct thing to do.

As to your second point, "You have been blocked [for] multi-years of ignoring requests to include edit summaries", may I point out two facts, of which you ought to be aware:

1. Edit summmaries are not required. They are optional. WP:ES says only "It is good practice to fill in the Edit summary field".
2. This particular editor, User:Cliff1911, has been hauled to WP:ANI a few times where his idiosyncratic editing, including failure to provide edit summaries, has been discussed, and the consensus always has been "He's easily a net positive to the project, and he's not going to change, so leave him alone".

If you want WP:ES to say "Failure to provide edit summaries can result in editors being blocked or banned", them you need to run a WP:RfC and get the wording changed. Until you do that, you are not supposed to act on your own just because you, personally, are irritated or in a bad mood or whatever.

As has been pointed out by editors who are familiar with User:Cliff1911, this editor does not engage, and may not know he has a talk page, so upon finding himself blocked, he may have either assumed the block was permanent, or felt unwelcome. Either way, he has apparently left the project for good, not having edited since his block and IMO very unlikely to do so.

So by blocking this editor, you effectively removed him from the project, as I could have predicted, and per point #2 above you have done so in direct contravention of the consensus of even your fellow admins. If you don't want to listen to me, fine, but you ought at least give some respect to admin corps, for goodness' sake.

Guideline and policy news

• Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
• Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
• The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

• The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.

Obituaries

• JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

The problem here, where your revert is wrong is the name Blue Mountain (Singular) is inappropriate to a ridgeline with a length of 255 miles, or at least 150 miles as the crow flies. Older topo maps show it appropriately as Blue Mountain Ridge, acknowledging it has many peaks; that is also distinct from GNIS name Blue Ridge Mountain. That another disambig page Blue Mountain already includes a link to the article is to the good. Someone looking for the page can find it easier. No logically good reason two disambig pages can't link such, when the case is the difference and the problem. Kindly undo your revert, least I need to do so. // FrankB 21:00, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

@Fabartus: Thank you for the heads up. The dab page Blue Mountains contains 22 entries, all of which are plural. In a discussion years ago, I pointed out that having both Blue Mountain and Blue Mountains dab pages is a little confusing even for English literate persons, but those for which English is a second language may find it completely befuddling. Maybe the proper course is to combine them? Unless there is some aspect I am unaware of, Black Mountain/Black Mountains and White Mountain/White Mountains have the same issue. —EncMstr (talk) 21:19, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Heh, heh. Those and many others. Actually think the issue is decades old and rooted in inconsistent policy or division inside the USGS and/or GNIS community. As a railroad buff, I acquired quite a few 1890s-1820s series USGS topo maps when they were available via some University servers years back. These are particularly valuable for showing railroading in its prime - nearly a maximum extent - but also because auto-clubs hadn't yet lobbied to create later road networks junking up the terrain. In those, these Ridge-and-Valley systems are generally labeled with Ridges, or occasionally by Mountains. Mountain Singular, I conjecture came about as an advertising side dish, like 'Lehigh Valley' and 'Delaware Valley', in announcements. Since 2004, this sort of issue generally gets limp noodle enthusiasm put to a vote, so best to resolve in a conversation like this. • Blue Mountains - is for Australia, a world class chain, so important there as they have so few chains. (I Skype on line with a few Aussies, 16 hr diffs in schedules permitting).
• IMHO, the proper name for Blue Mountain (Pennsylvania) is not as I pipetricked it in my edit, but Blue Mountains, Pennsylvania which would emphasize its cross-state extent. But THAT battle was one I haven't yet decided to fight, you know!? // FrankB 00:40, 30 March 2017 (UTC)

Last summer, some change was made to the Wikimedia API that the process used and broke its authetication resulting in denied writes (but it computes the new page just fine). I have made several attempts to figure out how to fix it, but it baffled me that no other bot had the same problem, or maybe it just wasn't discussed. When it worked, it ran daily. I can run the automatic part and manually write the result, which sounds easy but somehow was more work than I expected. Perhaps over the weekend. —EncMstr (talk) 06:23, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

@Tagishsimon: I wrote a better article but it was lost before saving when I upgraded Firefox yesterday. It occurred to me something like a "multi-redirect" or disambiguation would be a better way to handle the situation because I think only two albums were produced by them, so it is a bold effort to improve Wikipedia. The page itself is referenced by Radio Paradise when they play anything from the album. You're right - they also did In the Heart of the Moon with Toumani Diabaté (of whose 1988 album Songhai, and 1999 New Ancient Strings I cannot speak highly enough.) Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it. We aim to collaboratively edit/enter 18 Jewish women artists into the canon. Support will be provided by an experienced local Wikipedian who will be on site to teach and guide the process. But I'm concerned that you removed a couple wikilinks, and here's why: if there aren't at least 3 wikilinks in an article, other users browsing with AutoWikiBrowser will automatically tag it with Template:Underlinked. That's the rule as much as I disdain it. It doesn't matter how short an article is, if it doesn't contain at least 3 wikilinks, it will eventually be tagged with the ugly Underlinked template.

The article's history shows that—up until it was semi-protected—there was regular vandalism with many requiring version deletion (there are 79 revisions which most users cannot see). Since then, edits are highly civil and, as far as I looked, there are no bad faith edits. Maybe that is cause to believe the protection is unnecessary or at least to experimentally unprotect with the hope that editors have collectively evolved and no longer will do what was commonplace over 11 years ago.

Naw. The desire for expressions of vanity hasn't decreased nor has a sense of abundant respect developed in schoolkids around the world, certainly not in North America. I fully expect that reducing protection will result in a full assault requiring frequent reversions like it was before 2008.

However, if you or others have a personal motivation for improving the page, you have several options:

• Add an edit request to the talk page, or
• Create a Wikipedia editing account, log in, and improve some (other) articles until you have achieved confirmed status.

Permanent protection is not called for in this situation, especially since there are 152 page watchers. (See WP:PPINDEF for insight about permanent protection.) I understand how frustrating it can feel to clean up after bad faith edits, but look around at other contentious articles and you should see that good prevails over evil because evil is so easily undone in this environment. Be aware that there is a three revert (in any 24 hour interval) limit for each editor (per WP:3RR). If you notice anyone exceeding that, report at WP:AIV. I chose 12 hour protection in the hopes that some discussion might defuse the situation, but I didn't research the dispute at all (having just woke up). I’ve suggested making this page protected or semi-protected as it is highly counterproductive and tedious, having to deal with malicious and vandal edits. Can you help with this? A permanent semi-protection as I see it from following this for a while, is the only way to keep this page protected from vandalism/malicious manipulation from users like the one reported above. For years I have been editing on and off until in the past few months I noticed something “intriguing”: Each time there was a “edit conflict” it was invariably caused by either Brazilians or Spaniards, or either of the two located elsewhere in the world but with ties to either or. Being partly Portuguese and having studied Humanities and Linguistics at the oldest and most prestigious Lusophone university, Coimbra, I am very confident in the History, Culture and Language of Portugal. I know only too well about the historical resentments from some Brazilians who blame the Portuguese as previous colonial power, for all which is wrong with Brazil today and some Spaniards who cannot comprehend why Portugal came to be, feel betrayed and to this day continue to resent the fact that for over 900 years their “small neighbour” repudiated their many attempts to impose a united Iberia. Basically by aligning with England militarily and commercially, Portugal has been perceived as traitor. Today even the timezone is the same in Portugal, UK and Ireland, different to mainland Europe. I believe that the current independent movements in Catalonia may make more Spaniards feel that Galicia where they basically speak “old Portuguese” despite many centuries of “Hispanisation” where even surnames, names of towns and the language itself were suppressed and replaced as late as 1974, may also want independence or worse, join the Lusophone league of countries. The Spanish issue is deeper as historically the Portuguese sided with the English and in fact were the inspiration for NATO for instance. The English humiliated Spain and spread a racial rumour of “beyond France it’s all Africa” which was an insult aimed at the Spanish and their long, deep-rooted Moorish influence. The Portuguese expelled their Moors almost 3 centuries earlier and in terms of Islamic legacy or importance, their presence was much smaller and fragmented in Portugal. Portuguese and Galician are mainly Iberian-Celtic peoples, the two language variations are Romance and stem from the medieval Galician-Portuguese which has little Arabic influence and more relevant Celtic components. The official Spanish language, Castilian has 8% of Arabic in their inventory and the Islamic heritage is also quite prevalent in architecture, cuisine, music etc. The Spanish have endured the “Hispanic” stigmatisation from America for many decades too. It is something many find hurtful and I know that a lot of Spaniards try now to separate themselves from the Hispanic definition meaning, they are not brown and semi-illiterate Latin-Americans but a European, first world people. The Portuguese are traditionally racially unaware and were never confronted with justifying their origins in a racial way... there’s not one Portuguese race but a melting pot of ancient peoples who settled in Portugal. If you see the two pages and compare the scrutiny, you will notice something very “intriguing” again. A lot of the genetic studies quoted here have been carried out by either Spaniards or Spanish-friendly scholars. The “Moors” are avoided like the plague and the Visigoths gain a legendary importance which even Boris Johnson, the current UK prime minister noticed and made a programme about:

There’s no such sub-section as “Genetic History of the Iberian Peninsula” in the Spaniards page, contrasting with the Portuguese people page. Now as Iberia is at least 75% Spain how come this topic only touches Portugal, the tiny neighbour? Precisely because the Portuguese don’t have hang ups about their culture or genetics or language or racial qualification:

I opened a discussion thread to reach a consensus, but if you look at Melroross's performance, you can see he has no intention of acting in good faith.

He has systematically deleted sources of a scientific nature, has also deleted literal text extracted from the current source used in this article, he deletes the messages and other opinions in the thread, and also he altered the title of the open Talk even though they have already warned him not to do so and which violates Wikipedia rules. And all this using (as you have surely observed) a fairly accusative language with many personal attacks that have nothing to do with the subject in question.

I am willing to dialogue in the open thread of discussion, my objective is to apply in this article what the source literally says, because the current statement is completely incoherent and doesnt adapt to the source. It enumerates all transclusion references to template:WikiProject Oregon from the English Wikipedia, and the contributions to each article by each project member. Also, for the Admin2 page, it reads WP:WikiProject Oregon/Participants. The Bot writes only to the WP:WikiProject Oregon/Activity, WP:WikiProject Oregon/Admin, and WP:WikiProject Oregon/Admin2 pages (without reading anything from them).

Even though he only edits from IP addresses, is it worth submitting a WP:LTA report? Although some of his past edits have been obviously nonsensical, in some cases, such as his latest edits, it's sneaky abuse that requires more explanation, and may not be readily apparent to an admin not familiar with the case. On the 6th of June I made a fairly good amount of clean-up and standardization of tables for the list of Scottish monarchs. Surtsicna wiped out all the images for the first 3 tables claiming "Removing silly fanciful portraits. No serious work of reference includes these. Also removing unnecessary pipes per WP:NOPIPE and fixing excessive capitalization". The images have been there for a very long time and I never learned they were "fakes". Could you check on whether the images should really be removed and, if not, help me to take back the page to the version at 07:32 on 6 June 2020?

Hi, ICE77. Thanks for pinging me. Most of the images are 17th-century paintings. Some are from the 19th century even. They are not commonly associated with the kings in scholarly literature, and thus should not be used on Wikipedia without a very good reason. Using them without explanation and a good reason is misleading. We do not want the readers to think, for example, that these 10th-century people dressed in 17th-century fashion. The page was first created at 2020-04-14 08:10:08 (US Pacific time), revised (to delete categories present in the wikitext) about 50 minutes later. Then it was changed at 2020-05-02 05:52:50. The first and second revisions were a redirect to Doki Doki Literature Club!. The last version changed the redirect to Monika (given name). The first revision placed the redirect into 4 categories (which has little useful effect): Category:Female characters in video games, Category:Video game characters introduced in 2017, Category:Internet memes, and Category:Internet memes introduced in 2017. That is when it was recreated. It was originally created as a full-length character page like GLaDOS, deleted on a rollback of its creator's edits, and then redirected by ItWillBeTossed a few days later, who used part of the original page on an old version of Sayori (character). My question is whether a previous revision of a page after it has been deleted and a new redirect has been added can still be viewed? I would assume one some level it should be. Right, so it was not in fact always a redirect despite what you may see. Firstly there was a full-length in-detail page there, which was deleted on a rollback of its creator's edits in early to mid-April. And then later that same day, ItWillBeTossed created the page again, this time as a redirect rather than as an article. Earlier that same day, before the page was deleted, they used a fragment of the original Monika (character) to create this revision of Sayori (character), but there is an older revision of Monika (character) which I cannot see due to it being deleted, and then recreated as a redirect. 2001:BB6:52F1:AB00:F0FD:1345:80A:1854 (talk) 23:00, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I wanted to leave a personal message that I did not mean any disrespect by reverting your edit to Breitenbush Hot Springs. It is truly tragic the facility there burned in the wildfires, and I hope they are able to recover and reopen soon. I may have been a little trigger happy reverting (and with my edit summary) but only because I've spent a lot of time cleaning up promotional content from hot springs articles. Many of these articles tend to become magnets for spas & resorts to advertise, or to add links to hotel booking sites. Please extend my apologies to Kitteh too. The emphasis that the trail exists solely for the use of end to end hikers of different stratifications misses the point of having the and making the trail. It’s for the use of every and anyone of various skill , age and gear levels. Probably 10000 (maybe 100000) to 1 hikers access and enjoy parts of the trail from many connecting routes. Sure, doing the whole trail in one go is neat and cool but it really is a niche activity that doesn’t reflect the PCT’s daily use and enjoyment by hikers. When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

Also: Free burritos!! We will be providing vegan, vegetarian, and meat burritos from food cart Loncheria Las Mayos. Alder Commons has a large, fenced playground. Children are welcome!
