Art Farmer discographyThanks for your expansion of pages for the Art Farmer discography. Your last edit there suggested that you are going to create a page for the Columbia album The Time and the Place; you also deleted the entry for the Mosaic album of the same name. My understanding is that these are separate albums – see Mosaic's account. Why they chose the same title for recordings which had been confused in the past is a mystery, but... If you agree with my interpretation, could you restore the Mosaic album/collection to the discog and maybe give your planned page a different title? I would like to introduce to something that you might find helpful and easy to use. When you add references to AllMusic, there is actually nice template ({{Allmusic}}) just for that use that will perfectly format the citation in the references section. Stan Kenton AlbumsGreetings, I want to point out that the Kenton albums, "Rendezvous with Kenton" and "Back to Balboa," were recorded at the Rendezvous Ballroom because Kenton wanted to capture the wide open ambience of the room. The album liner notes clearly state that this was Kenton's intention. There was no audience present so these cannot be considered live recordings. "The Stage Door Swings" is a studio album. I could have made the necessary changes myself but thought that you'd like to handle the corrections yourself. Often I encounter conflicting data. I thought this kind of data would be easy to get and relatively reliable, but problems exist. I'm surprised at how much AllMusic gets wrong: dates, labels, musicians' names, songwriters. You name it and they'll get it wrong. I could use Discogs, but that information comes from everyone and is therefore not a legitimate source for Wikipedia, and in fact I've seen errors in Discogs. The musician's web site seems like an obviously reliable source, but often the site's discography is incomplete and lists albums with the labels that are currently distributing them, rather than the labels that issued them in the beginning. I know that retail sites can't be used, though I occasionally look at Amazon for verification, but Amazon, too, has incorrect data. Other problems arise: this label bought that label, or this one distributes that one, which is different for imports, and so on. What seems like simple information turns out to be more difficult to locate than it ought to be. I thought there might be some kind of business or legal source or site where this information could be found with something closer to certainty or reliability. Any ideas? Thanks for your help. I don't want to sound too critical, but I wonder why so many of the articles you create are short on references. This strikes me as odd because based on your User Page you seem to have been here a while and you know what you're doing. I don't create many pages because I know there are many other articles that need to be improved first. I try to do what's best for Wikipedia. When I create a page, I try to make sure I've laid a solid framework with enough good references. Otherwise, I feel I've dropped unfinished work into someone else's lap. Does that make sense? There are already too many inchoate articles on Wikipedia. Is there any chance of altering your methods slightly?

I don't know if you use syntax highlighting, but it doesn't work as well with semicolons.
Additions to Billy ButlerYou added two albums by Johnny Hodges to the Billy Butler article. Where did that information come from?. Discographies have to be sourced, too. One result if they aren't is that all the people who make unsourced drive-by edits will continue to do so. If regular editors aren't going to document their work, then why should some guy sitting at Starbucks with his iPhone? Or with his laptop in front of the TV, tapping in a piece of information that happens to pop into his head. Those little bugs can bring a good article down, and they reflect poorly on the rest of Wikipedia. If you've been here for ten years, you should know all this, so if you do, then maybe you can share your method of operation so that I and everyone else can know what the rules of editing at Wikipedia really are. I don't like to see music articles treated as a rule-free zone where people are encouraged to kick up their feet and lay back and avoid everything that applies to more serious subjects on the rest of site. The facts in music articles are important, too, and ought to be documented. Obviously it can be pushed too far, but let's at least start down the road to documenting and improving the hundreds of existing articles that need work and get our own methods in order. DashesI really don't understand how inconsistent your articles are. So many of them have short dashes and long dashes. Is there some kind of template you're using? Like a copy and paste? While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons. You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing Cosmopolite by Benny Carter and album editingI know you've been around a while, but you can save yourself some time and trouble if you make a few changes in how you edit album pages, assuming you still edit the way you edited Cosmpolite by Benny Carter. Per MOS, don't link instruments, except in certain rare cases. If you are going to provide track by track credits, you need a source. I assume you got these from discogs.com, which cannot be used as a source because it relies on user-generated content. Save yourself the trouble, regardless, because track by track credits are messy and unnecessary. Name and instrument is enough, though if you want to go into detail you can do that in the body of the article. Per MOS, one person per line, "double bass" instead of "bass" for acoustic bass, and "bass guitar" for electric bass. You used small text to enter catalog numbers. If you want to use small text, you can use the Track-Note-Length template that I used. When you put the composer in the Note field, it appears in small text. Generally I'm against small text because computer text is small enough already. In this case, the Title-Note-Length template looks nice, and it's easier and faster to type. Don't enter catalog numbers. If you want to go into detail about releases you can do that in the body text. If every album page used catalog numbers, it would be a different story. But for the sake of consistency and simplicity, leave off the catalog numbers. WP isn't a record collector's catalog. It's unnecessary detail that most readers don't want or need. Last, I'm not a big fan of that AllMusic template that some people use, the one with the id number, because it usually lacks important information such as the access date and author. I find the easiest way to do citations is to copy and past the URL into the pop up box in the Templates drop down menu and let the fields fill in automatically. Many IP users seem unaware of this method. It's easiest, fastest, and most thorough. One other point: There are differences in the track listing in what you entered and what AllMusic has. Where did you get your track listing? Which album does it refer to? Would it better to list the tracks from an album that people are more likely to see? Thank you for reading. Talk! 03:22, 8 August 2019 (UTC) Blues albumsGood work on a lot of older blues albums and artist discographies. One thing I noticed is that several compilation albums by artists are being added to the discographies of the sidemen. This can be misleading, since the sidemen might only play on a couple of songs; these compilations may span 10 or more years and include several different sidemen on the same instrument. Unless it is certain that one plays on all or most of the album's songs, maybe identify specific songs or add something like "Other pianists/guitarists/bassists/etc. also play on some songs". Thanks. —Ojorojo (talk) 14:55, 19 September 2019 (UTC)

We have no criteria for choosing one album over another, it would lead to unproductive debate, and we do our best to make the discography fairly complete, at least in the practical, everyday sense most people care about. I aim for good rather than perfect. Thanks. Please click on my name for other notes regarding the jazz project. Thank you for reading and for your many contributions.-Vmavanti (talk) 23:52, 31 March 2020 (UTC) CadetWhat that article really needs is sourced material, not more albums. We usually omit catalog numbers. The article needs content, not more data. Articles that are merely lists sometimes get deleted because they don't provide any content. Wikipedia isn't a record collector's catalog. It's written for everyone. The PrintmakersI saw from the edit history that you created the article for The Printmakers. There are some problems. Before you create another article, please read the Wikipedia documentation, starting with notability. Try to establish notability before creating an article. This saves everyone a lot of wasted time, effort, and aggravation. One sentence doesn't constitute an "article". That should be common sense. One or two sources usually isn't enough, something everyone should have learned in school. See the documentation for the latest version of infoboxes. There needs to be consistency from article to article. Omit catalog numbers. These are of special interest to a tiny group of collectors but mean nothing to the common reader and are not in the public interest. References and external links are not interchangeable and therefore they or the sections that contain them should not be combined or confused. Don't put entire sentences in italics simply because it looks pretty on the screen. It doesn't. Don't link instruments unless it's something out of the ordinary. Linking them assumes that every person who reads an article on an album will automatically want to read about, say, the history of the trumpet. Not true. The preferred order for personnel comes from classical music, where instruments are listed from high notes to low. In jazz, this usually means: leader first (it's their album), then brass (trumpet, trombone), woodwinds (soprano sax on down), piano, keyboards, guitar, bass guitar or double bass, drums, percussion, vocals. ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message50th Birthday Celebration album coversHi, I just wanted to let you know that I will be exporting to Commons the twelve 50th Birthday Celebration album covers for John Zorn you uploaded. As their designs consist only of simple geometric shapes and text, they are not subject to copyright – see {{PD-logo}}. Volumes 5 to 12 all use file names of the form "File:50th Birthday Celebration Volume n.jpg", which matches the titles of the respective album articles. But volumes 1 to 4 use different file naming structures, and I will be renaming them to match those of volumes 5 to 12. Once the twelve images are exported to Commons, I will be uploading higher resolution images from AMG, and their corresponding fair-use files in Wikipedia will be deleted. So you may see deletion notices on your talk page. —Bruce1eetalk 11:45, 13 January 2021 (UTC) Dave DouglasDave Douglas has asked me to do some updates on his article.
