In fact any user may close the discussion if enough time (normally one week or more) has elapsed. Administrators are not needed. We are approaching two months with no discussion. Crowsus thanks for such a thoughtful and considered message. After reading what you had to say I don't think there is any reason for us to be in conflict, as we have much more in common than what divides us. I took a day or two to think over what you'd said and I won't "bite your head off" in the way you were apparently expecting. Truth be told, instead of being bogged down in futile arguments over the notability of players and leagues I don't care about, I'd be much happier beavering away on my own area of interest which in my case is women's soccer. The FPL stuff kept getting in the way, and yes I know it feels vindictive to have your work 'targeted' in exactly the way you fear might happen to your stuff. That's why I decided to fight our corner. For a while there was a sort of uneasy truce which recently ended with industrial scale deletions of our articles. Bizarrely it turns out one of the main culprits with a morbid obsession for deleting women's soccer articles has himself been churning out totally non-notable Norwegian crap for years. Go figure! On FPL I respect that you have the integrity to tell the truth about it. I must admit I also have a grudging respect for GiantSnowman and his latest acolyte Spiderone who are fighting a valiant rear-guard action over at the talk page of WP:FPL, despite the only tools at their disposal being bullshit and obfuscation. You haven't taken that path which is to your credit. Ultimately though unless they come up with some evidence their position will be impossible to sustain. In truth, as I'm sure you've realised, 'fully professionalism' has always been a nonsense. It was only ever a device for privileging certain leagues over others. That's why, I think, there's a degree of incredulity at the suggestion its rules might ever be applied to men's football in England and Scotland. At the moment there are far too many non-notable perma-stubs pegged solely on Neil Brown's stat website or, in Scotland, John Litster's stats compendium, which (I think) is a self-published Excel spreadsheet on a CD-Rom. Undoubtedly some of them will have to go. Whatever happens in future I know that you are coming from a good place, the Wikipedia football project needs a few more like you. Great (do not confuse with "big", as in Portuguese the word "grande" may mean both, LOL!) message mate, thanks a lot! Agree with 300% of what you convey there, which is all the more worrysome since i grasp the concept (WP:CIVIL) and do it over and over again :( Those summaries would eventually come to bite me in my wiki-ass, as exemplified in Ricardo Ferreira, article 99,999999999999999% improved and maintained by me, and because of an histerical summary (by no means i insulted anyone there, have never insulted anyone except vandals, would very much like to see anyone show me proof to the contrary) now the article has been "arranged", utter mess with one-liners and needless repetition of the (foreign!) word Primeira Liga, have told the other person involved i'm not touching that article ever again, they can "improve" it all they want; serves me right (and i'm not being sarcastic or anything, i really gotta tone my summaries down. But i think it would be neat that at least that person, who complained to the admin about me, had had the courtesy of notifying me)!

LOL with the Lizarazuzes, the (now all Spaniard!) Laportes and the Urains, first time i have heard of this guy (https://www.bdfutbol.com/en/j/j26561.html, first surname could not be any more Basque, last one could not be more from the Highlands :)).

About Scottish football, have a look as this "friendly" interaction i had in Capucho. I wrote that his spell there was "devoid of silverware" because in Scotland it's Rangers or Celtic that win it, period. I was not trying to belittle player or club with that assessment, but watch the other guy's "classy" comeback in the summaries. You know what "BJK" means, I wager?

Your doubt about W. José: yup, those two I just mentioned are both forenames, and "Silva" his only surname. Depends on how the parents (or single parent) decide to register the infant, i've seen this strange case of a person whose mother (it read so in their ID) was called "Maria", nothing more and nothing less (happens a lot in low-income regions, i suppose)...

Regarding the finals, the lads did put up a fight against Real, and held on until the 65th minute or so against Barcelona. I prefer going (almost) all the way to be honest, still better than losing in the first round against CD Alcoyano with this monster keeper saving everything with every part of his body ;)

Hi, I noticed you and another bot are transferring Basque categories to Basque Country (autonomous community). Although sometimes may be right, please be aware that it often is not, and now a proper clean-up is due. Basque Country (autonomous community) is an administrative nominalism that does not apply to the Basque people straddling the Pyrenees and hence encompassing at least part of Navarre. Sources were describing him as "Irish" before then, at least January 2018. The general rule is - if somebody was born and raised in country X, but plays for country Y at international level due to parentage, we remove the nationality from the opening sentence as it is ambiguous. But if a player was born in one country but moved elsewhere as a child (such as Sterling or Ogbene) we do not. GiantSnowman 11:05, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi, the source states 'Northern Ireland team', which came into being as a seperate national team around the time McCraken joined Crystal Palace. Although the Wikipedia article looks to imply it also existed prior to that (and therefore proior to partition) but personally I am not particuarly sure that's correct. • i would agree the situation is a little confused. Presumably you are not just making this up (I imagine you know beter than that!) but the only source we have to date is that he played for Northern Ireland. Also, your change has been inserted immediately before a source which does not support it. If you say the source is inaccurate, then the issue lies with the source. Wikipedia relies on what has been written in the sources and WP:VNT applies. If you have a source to support that he played for a 'unified' team please feel free to add it. Cheers. I take it you have heard about this? The article is a little confusing ("On further investigation, the matches against Australia, Canada and Australia have now been deemed to be full international matches."). Why does it say Australia twice? It seems odd that they would now count the Australia and Canada games, but not the Israel game. It doesn't look like the statistical part of the SFA site has been updated yet. We will probably need to wait for that due to the lack of clarity in the statement. The article has now been edited to say "Australia, Canada and Israel". That makes more linguistic sense, but means they are counting a game against a Canada "Olympic" team as a full international. Hi Crowsus - you added an entry for the above footballer. He's my great grandad! The family were aware of his days at hearts and Coleraine, but the rest is a surprise! I have actually ended up living in Dublin, so that's an interesting part of it. Though I'd tend towards Bohs instead of shelbourne! Can you let me know where the stats came from, and where your interest in him came from? Really interested to find out more about him, as there wasn't a great deal of closeness between him and my grandad.

Hi. Has there has been consensus garnered in support of these changes to flag links, because there really ought to be project-wide backing for your undertaking to "amend all flags"?

I don't quite understand why we would conflate nationality (or sporting nationality, as you say) with national association. The two, while strongly tied, aren't necessarily equivalent. I don't think the average reader would click on a link to "Trinidad and Tobago" under a nationality column and expect to be taken to our page for that country's national association (hence MOS:EGG). And it isn't a given that a player actually has a tangible connection to their country's national association, which would namely be achieved through international representation. For example, it's questionable whether a link to the French association is relevant for a player like Gilles Grimandi who didn't represent France at any level.

I'm not sure we need to write the country names in full (FIFA code with a wikilink is MoS-compliant, see MOS:FLAG and Template:Flag), but if we were to we should be consistent with font size, and not display the countries with longer names in smaller text (see MOS:FONTSIZE). I also would point out that the flags/links were not raised as a concern at the FLC which took place three years. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 01:44, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

@Mattythewhite: Thanks for the message, can you please place it (or a version thereof, feel free to include anything I've put here or on that edit summary) on the FOOTY talk page, because I would of course like to ensure consensus on this (or against it) – to be honest I thought there already was to an extent due to the Current Squad templates which are obviously pretty important, although I can't point to anything specific at present which set a precedent for this use, hopefully someone at the project might be able to - this was something I asked about recently for a squad table (which isn't used too much) to match the Current Squad and the question was asked about whether to link to NT or FA, with the latter being favoured as the player 'belongs' to the FA where or not they played for NT. But again that is a point that could and should be debated by a wider group if possible. Nobody seemed to object/care when I bought up the subject at that time but I realise these things are easily missed - but my argument generally would be that if we're doing that (changing the flag target) for some football-related things, it is logical really to do it for all. I see very little value in a flag for a footballer linking to the article on the overall country, particularly when that's discouraged in text. Yeah I agree about the three-letter code, it wasn't until later last night I found the right code to use ( |name=ENG ) so I can definitely put that in either right now or later. @Island92: You can see just above that I have been contacted by this with regard to another article and as I said then, I am eager to ensure consensus is reached - or otherwise, I have made my view on it pretty clear. First tier nations should not be linked to in text, why should a flag for a sportsperson be any different? Really the options as I see them are are {{flagu| (but then it's purely decorative, which is also discouraged) or {{fbaicon| (which it has been suggested is a 'surprise' link, though it would not be if embraced across the topic and readers knew Spain went to RFEF etc). To be honest I thought consensus had been established already as the 'Current Squad' template (which is obviously for players) was changed to point to the FA some time ago, something I had no involvement in, so if nobody had an issue with that, logically moves should be taken to extend the practice to all the links for footballers. But you should take it up at FOOTY (or elsewhere you feel would be suitable, it's obviously a football related issue but one that reaches wider in relation to the use of flags and nationality) for a full discussion. Probably better discussing this here than in the edit notes. Have to say I don't think I've adde dozens of players with post Motherwell caps. Pre Motherwell caps is relevant as it highlights players with international experience playing for the club.

Re Lee Mcculloch, I didn't have any international appearances listed next to him, because as you said, his appearances happened after he left Motherwell.

As I've been reformatting the article, I've tried to pay attention to these details. Maybe one or two have been missed/are inaccurate, and those will get picked up as the article is checked over again. Happy to go through and remove any post Motherwell caps I may have added.

Hi Crowsus, hope you're OK and thanks for all the great contributions. I don't think this is controversial but want to ask you, as you're the main editor of the articles in recent years – would you mind if I merged the Second Division Cup into the SWFL Cup article? I want to keep all the information from the Second Division Cup (this certainly isn't questioning its notability), but that information could be most useful in giving a fuller understanding of the League Cup and its history. And for a few other reasons:

- the present SWFL Cup is the closest continuation of the 2nd Division Cup, AFAIK (same tier, many of the same clubs)
- SWF treated its two League Cups as complementary, to the point of re-using the same sign for the SWFL 1 / SWFL 2 finals over the years. (Efficient!)
- also on a practical point, a defunct 3rd-/4th-tier cup article probably gets little attention compared to an active one.

For the existing info, I would make a separate section about the Second Division Cup with all the descriptive paragraphs – and for the finals and winners, I'd put that table under "2012–19", below the First Division Cup finals. How does that sound?

If you ever want to delete an empty category that you created, just tag it with CSD tags like {{Db-g7}} or {{Db-author}}. This goes for empty categories only and for categories that you created and which no other editors have made substantial contributions to. Tagging is even easier if you make use of Twinkle but you can also blank the page and add the codes I just listed. Hi, I don't believe that every player born outside of the country they have represented internationally should have their nationality suppressed in the lead. Not every country gives citizenship on a jus soli basis, so there is no indication that Khazzaka is French. He began his career in Lebanon, and even before then he was described as "Lebanese" by sources, not "French" or "Lebanese-French". For example, Erling Haaland was born in England, but that doesn't mean that he's English (British). Nehme₁₄₉₉ 11:37, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

@Nehme1499: Yep no problem, I think I decided the same halfway through so I didn't add Category:French footballers (unlike with the many Algerian internationals with their whole lives in France I have come across where that's been removed!), and so I should have put the nationality back in the text too. In general, football of the early 20th century suffers a lot from neglect and lack of interest and I find that to be absolutely distasteful and in some cases, criminal.

When I started I was more interested in developing the likes of Yugoslavia national football team results (1920–1941), Czechoslovakia national football team results (1920–1938), England national amateur football team results (1906–1939), but on the 5th of June I created what remains my best work yet, the Prince of Asturias Cup (which is also the day I met you), and I have been creating and expanding articles of pre civil war Spanish footballers ever since. This intire Spanish adventure was all just an accident. I'm trying to move on now, but I still have like 20 more players that SHOULD have a wiki page.

@Clenixon: Haha yeah I definitely know what you mean, I have done the same with a few dozen pre-WWII Scottish players (not the internationals, they were already created but many got 1 line of text then abandoned) thinking they deserve it, but would not be surprised if some got deleted over the next few years due to GNG, we will see, let's face it there is a lot of football content and at some point they might sweep some good stuff out along with the bad. Just remember if it's all becoming too annoying or taking too much time, take some time away from it for a while, there is no deadline and the players that haven't had an article for 10/15 years - when they should have based on their achievements - probably can wait a bit longer until it's convenient for you to add one for them.
