In my response yesterday to changing the route diagram entry from Northern Line to Northern line I claimed that Northern Line was a proper name, like Margaret Thatcher, not Margaret thatcher. Spurred by your reply I've read through the Wikipedia entries on and around proper names and concluded that I may be wrong. I'm no longer clear whether Northern Line is a proper name or not, but it seems to fit exactly into the category of Brand names, which carry the capitalisation assigned to the brand which may or may not look "right" or conventional (eg CBeebies). Looking at the link to Merseyrail in the Northern line (Merseyrail) article itself there is a nice pair of examples to make the point, Northern Line is referred to as exactly that, whereas the Southport line (ie the line which leads to Southport) is referred to as exactly that.

I reckon forcing our (I live within sight of the Southport line and use Northern Line trains frequently) Northern Line to fit a Wikipedia convention is back to front, Wikipedia should do its best to reflect the real world, but I'm not going to war over it.

It's a controversial area; the consensus has come down against capitalisation generally, but there are a lot of difficult cases. The same argument could be applied to the Northern line in London, but that too now uses lower-case in its article title. Colonies Chris (talk) 08:18, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

Thanks to all. but the work is not complete, and there are many anomalies that need to be reviewed. To quote just a few examples, why Great Western main line but Chiltern Main Line, or South Western Main Line but South Eastern main line? Why Oxted line but Sheerness Line? Why Portsmouth Direct line rather than Portsmouth direct line? Why Epsom Downs Branch but Bishops Waltham branch? Why Gloucester loop line but Henbury Loop Line or Northampton loop or Southbury Loop? Why Cotswold Line but Heart of Wales line? Why Stafford–Manchester line but Stone to Colwich Line? Why Birmingham to Worcester via Kidderminster line but Birmingham to Worcester via Bromsgrove Line? Why Romford–Upminster line but Gospel Oak to Barking line? Why North London line but East London Line? And the naming of closed routes scarcely seems to have been updated at all (Category:Closed railway lines in England). Colonies Chris (talk) 09:33, 30 July 2017 (UTC)
