They are far and away better known as the Reno Gang. Searching on "Reno Brothers Gang" brings up a single entry on the first page, and even that's only in the title; the actual article calls them the "Reno Gang". Clarityfiend (talk) 06:39, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. FYI: I was concerned about the name of the Wiki article because I was working on the navbox Template:Lynching in the United States, where it appeared to be an article about a gang in Reno, Nevada -- but upon looking at the article I discovered that the gang in question was actually based in Indiana. I also noticed that the first words of the article are the following: "The Reno Brothers Gang, also known as the Reno Gang...." So it struck me as a very obvious page move. You can see in the further reading section that the titles all say "Reno Gang", not "Reno Brothers Gang". I'd recommend reverting the move and reversing the names in the first sentence. Clarityfiend (talk) 16:23, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Hey there, I just discovered the existence of Category:Women writers for children, which you created recently. My wife and I have both worked in this field, and I'm afraid we're having trouble seeing a good rationale for having this gender-based category. The short answer: I was asked to create it. :-)

The longer answer: it was created as one of a set of categories proposed/discussed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women writers as part of a broader categorization of women writers by genre (eg: Category:Women novelists, Category:Women poets, Category:Women dramatists and playwrights, etc.) in support of the project. Any other questions about the category would be better directed there, honestly - for one I'm not always the best person at articulating my rationales, and for another I'm traveling at the moment so I'll be limited in my ability to respond.

I'll also invite participation from members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Children's Literature, who also have a very obvious interest in this particular category -- and may well have a different perspective on the question. Wikipedia needs people like you and me to collaborate, so it's one of our core principles to interact with one another in a polite and respectful manner. If you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Yes, I am templating a regular. Justification -- your edit summaries are less than diplomatic. As for the redirect categorizations, take a look at WP:RCAT. "Most redirects should not be placed in article categories." Your reverts have put the redirects into article categories. Since you are back on Wikipedia, why don't you go back to the redirects and properly categorize them? Thanks. – S. Rich (talk) 03:08, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

• Oh, the amazing irony of being scolded by somebody who had himself ignored the most basic act of civility on Wikipedia: namely, posting a note on someone's talk page. Would you care to explain why you, as a very experienced editor, completely ignored the edit histories for those redirects -- which should have prompted you to ask me why I had already restored those categories on a prior occasion before you removed them. Instead, you proceeded without ever giving that a thought. So much for kindness and respect for fellow editors. It seems to me that my edit summaries, while perhaps less civil than they could have been, were fair descriptions of what took place. And btw, I could have referenced you by name, but I chose not to.

As to the issue here: I put a good deal of effort into creating those redirect pages -- primarily for the express purpose of having them show up in category listings. Again, how ironic -- and frankly, insulting -- that you would presume to instruct me on the correct use of categories on redirect pages, by quoting one general passage from WP:RCAT. Whereas, if you had bothered to read the whole thing, you would have seen the following:

Alternative names for articles

"The primary function of the category system is to allow readers to browse through articles. The category system is often used like an alphabetical index. It is sometimes helpful for redirects from common alternative names to appear in the index list. Editors should consider whether alternative names should be mixed in with other names, or not."

It really doesn't go far enough, imo, but that alone should have been enough to make you pause and, at the very least, ask a question before proceeding. Cgingold (talk) 03:56, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

Hello - I have a question regarding Category:Kurdish geography, which you created recently: Were you aware that there was already a Category:Geography of Kurdistan? Do we really need two separate categories that seem to cover the same subject area? Is there a compelling reason not to merge the new category into the older one? Hi - In the last day I've come across 3 different categories regarding activists (Fictional, deaf, and "books about") that had been erroneously placed under categories for politicians. I wasn't surprised to find that they were all the work of the same editor... So I thought perhaps I should bring this to your attention, just in case there are any other categories where you've done the same thing and are also in need of correction. Good morning, Cgingold. Thanks for calling my attention about "activists" etc. Let me kindly comment on the topic. As you probably know, politics is "the practice and theory of influencing other people. Politics involves the making of a common decision for a group of people, that is, a uniform decision applying in the same way to all members of the group. It also involves the use of power by one person to affect the behavior of another person." So far, I see that (almost) all of us are involved in politics of this or that kind. No need to be a member of a political party, no need to have an ideology, etc. I may be a member of "the group", be in a minority position and wish to influence the rest of the members with my position. So, there is "politics inside politics" as well.

One of these ways to exercise politics is through activism. You may be an activist working "for a party" or working "against a party". So, what is my point? Very simple: maybe an "activist" is not a "professional, traditional politician", but he/she is doing politics all the time for the sake of something he/she believes or wishes to enforce. And that is the concept behind classifying "activists" as "politicians".

Hello again, and thanks for taking the time to reply. As you surmised, I am indeed familiar with the broader meaning of the term "politics". Nonetheless, "activist" simply does not meet the standard definition and usage of the term "politician". You are welcome to think of them as such, if you wish to, but you cannot substitute your personal re-definition of the term for the standard, accepted meaning and usage -- which is what we go by on Wikipedia, especially when it comes to Categories.
