When using the template with the SAT and ACT scores and year property, for the SAT property, the year is in the right side, while for the ACT property, the year is on the left side. See Ruben S. Ayala High School for an example. Have I used the field correctly? If so, shouldn't the year display be standardized so that the year appears either on the left or on the right? On the way to finally converting this to an {{infobox}}, I've made some significant cleanup to the current codebase which can be found in the sandbox. This has resulted in a nearly 30% reduction in code size. There should be little change in the output, with the following exceptions:

1. Font metrics have been tweaked to match the {{infobox}} defaults. This alone will significantly decrease the footprint on the template in many cases.
2. Images now default to the user thumbnail size, which is 220px rather than 200px, and images will not be stretched to larger than their real size if smaller than that. Previously images were 200px even if users had their thumbnail preferences set to use a larger size, and images smaller than 200px were stretched if the size were omitted.

The test cases page has side-by-side examples.

Thanks for the efforts on this! This template is certainly a monster! And wow, you have done a pretty neat job here. The new version of the code is certainly more readable than the existing.

I do have some concerns though.

1. The current incarnation in the sandbox seems to remove the demonstration from the template page itself (in the upper right corner). While the demonstration for this template goes on forever and may be a bit excessive, from my limited experience on Wikipedia, it seems to be a tradition for infobox template pages.
2. In the testcases, example for Baltimore City College is missing the image.
3. in the testcases, example for Sutton High School, the motto is repeated.

1. Displaying the template on its own page is unnecessary with proper documentation; fewer and fewer templates use that method now. Furthermore, removing all the hacks that make this necessary substantially increases code readability.

It seems that the recent code change affected the Image field so that if an underscore is used instead of just a space, the image will no longer display. And since a lot of school logos are non-free, the deletion bot is going through and tagging the images an no longer being used in an article. Example: The article East Wake High School was using "East_Wake_High_School_Warrior.png" as the infobox image link instead of "East Wake High School Warrior.png" and the image no longer displayed correctly. I would say that the parameter is redundant and should be removed from the template, because any schools that need an Ofsted link will be using {{Infobox UK school}}, and if there are any using this template they need to be converted. --Bob Re-born (talk) 10:17, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

See, for example, the commented-out section near the top of the template in Eastern Hills High School. This part of the template doesn't work:

To get around it, I had to insert this ugly line:

Considering that the code in many templates in Wikipedia properly handles embedded images of practically any pixel size automatically, as well as alternate text and captions, this should be an easy copy-and-paste job to fix. — Quicksilver^{T @} 18:58, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

You could have just changed

Can it be helpful to disambiguate labels such as Motto, Type, Principal, Campus, Colors, Mascot, Newspaper, Yearbook, or other labels that might be needed, etc. in the template infobox. The labels listed can be found disambiguated on Template:Infobox secondary school. Since people wanted use Template:Infobox school on articles for the purposes of adding CEEB codes, NCES District ID, and other information that can use in the Template:Infobox school]]. This also affects Template:Infobox university where colors can be found disambiguated on university template, but not found disambiguated on the Infobox school template. To clarify, the request seems to be that the label terms be Wikilinked, not disambiguated. This seems reasonable to me, particularly since it may help readers not familiar with western education! In addition to the color box parameter not working, could someone also check that the "enrollment" (not enrolment) and "enrollment as of" parameters are working fine? Perhaps as often as once per week I find new school articles linking to Orange, which is a DAB page. This is usually a result of a new user putting internal links on the parameters of colors= / colours=. When I find such WP:OVERLINK, I remove the internal links on each color.

I wonder if it would be helpful to alter the usage note to something like, "Official school colours (use appropriate spelling) No internal links"? or maybe some mention of {{Color box}}? Cnilep (talk) 05:34, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

In many American schools, there are both a dean of students and an assistant principal (or multiple assistant principals) in the same building, so they aren't interchangeable terms. Here's an example. --JonRidinger (talk) 21:44, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

The infobox at Allen Central High School has the following params:

|city = Eastern
|state = KY
|county= Floyd County
|country = United States

This renders as "Eastern, KY, Floyd County, United States" (city,state,county,country)

For the United States, you may be right. However, this template is used for other countries as well and the current order may make more sense for them. What I do for US schools is to enclose the county in parenthesis. See Clinton High School (Clinton, New York) for an example. What is the parameter "campus_Bound" for? I don't see a definition for it. I might guess it's for a boundary, especially for a school that shares a campus address with another school, which sounds rare (there'd usually be a difference in buildings, floors, or at least rooms, and that would be a difference in addresses, making this parameter useless for that guess). I used the affirmative value for a schools group because sourcing shows they have sports but not much about what kind; however, an editor deleted the value as noncompliant with the template specification. I'd like to add these options so editors can let readers know that sports are available or are excluded, and to say that they are available even if what kind is not known. In one article, I'm trying to display the "founded" or "established" parameter value (I don't care which one) but either one fails with a vertical infobox layout. Both "founded" and "opened" worked when the parameters were laid out horizontally in the edit field, but an editor objected to the layout, and since then those parameters not only fail to display but also they usually prevent four other parameters from displaying. I wanted to disambiguate some infobox labels, so it could provide a relevant connection to the information that is shown by a school. Such as disambiguating the label: "Colors", 'Newspaper", "Yearbook", "Age range", "Years offered", "School type". Some of these labels have been shown disambiguated from Template: Infobox Secondary school. From Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines has recommend using Template:Infobox school as infoboxes for school articles. Some schools do include text in the lead section about adding info about what the school colors are. But, the label for [school] "Colors" is not disambiguated from the infobox.

Pre-kindergarten is a growing trend in the U.S.

The template offers parameters "gradeK" and for higher grades. When I commented in an article that gradeK should include pre-K identified as such, an editor deleted the comment, without explanation on point and maybe because a value wasn't supplied but I notice the template documentation doesn't say anything about pre-K. Two solutions (either one would help):

• Add a parameter "grade_pre-K" or "grade_pre_K", for optional use and to take the same type of value that the parameter "gradeK" now accepts. I don't know how to add a parameter, so, if you know, please do.
• Document that the parameter "gradeK" includes pre-K but that the value should say so. I can edit the documentation.

Thoughts? I'll wait a week for any response.

I would go for number 1. In the articles I have been working on (High schools in the US), I use NCES data, and their data reports grade enrollment by grade and specifically includes Pre-K enrollment. As things are now, I have to use "Other Grade" fields of the template to make these appear. Having a separate bucket makes a lot of sense to me. Could an admin please add a parameter? It should be parameter "grade_pre-K" or "grade_pre_K" (depending on whether a hyphen is allowed in a parameter name). Thank you. I did that. It's in the sandbox (relevant revision or, if still there, current) and a testcase (relevant revision or, if still there, current) is visible. There appears to be a consensus, the discussion has been open for just over two weeks now, and I doubt it would be controversial since no existing functionality would be removed or altered and the proposed new parameter would be optional. I can take care of updating the documentation if the template source code can be edited by an admin (I'm not one). Is there anything else I should do? Thanks. In the infobox, the school's motto displays without any kind of qualifier, as if it were a photo caption. This seems to fail NPOV, since it looks like we're using a phrase that's often quite complimentary as a statement of fact. Could we prefix it with "Motto:", for instance, to make it clearer that it's the school's own assertion and not WP's editorial opinion? I'm afraid I don't know anything about templates, so am loath to do the WP:BOLD thing and change it myself; and since the template's widely used, I'd be reluctant to change it without discussion. Just tested this a little further; I should make it clear that the problem doesn't exist when there's no photo. In that case, the motto appears prefixed by "Motto". How many US school articles actually use the county parameter? I don't think most, if any, should. In the US, we typically don't include the county in an address and doing so appears awkward and cumbersome, especially since the ZIP code is present. The Catlin Gabel School was a perfect example of how cumbersome it can appear as an editor included "unincorporated" before the county, so it read: "Portland, unincorporated Washington County, Oregon, 97225". My understanding of the infobox is that the address there is the street or mailing address, not the precise location. If a school isn't located in the city limits of the place it has an address for (which is rather common, especially for rural schools), then that can be explained right in the lead. --JonRidinger (talk) 17:21, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

It seems like having an athletics parameter (at least for US/Canada) that lists every varsity sport a school offers is somewhat unnecessary. First, it takes up a lot of space when the information could be more conveniently located in an athletics section. Second, the sports offered in the average high school are 90% similar to those offered by its conference, State athletic association, and frankly throughout North America.--Prisencolinensinainciusol (talk) 03:55, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

It was the custodian I spoke of. Just fail to see the utility of this field on this template, at least for US articles. Am I missing something internationally? I read the DAB, and i see nothing that would apply to schools other than janitor and possibly caretaker, neither of whom would have either the importance or notability to be discussed in an article on a school.
