Swallowed Star

Swallowed Star^[1] is an online science fiction novel by Chinese online writer “I eat tomatoes” on Qidian.com that ran from 2010-2012.^[2] It has 1,544 chapters and roughly 4,784,300 words.^[3] In May 2012, it was published as a series of physical books by Hubei Juvenile and Children's Publishing House.^[4]

In May 2018, Yuewen Games launched an action mobile game based on the novel, which was also named Swallowed Star.^[5] It was followed in April 7, 2023 by the game Dawn of Swallowed Star.^[6]

In 2020, Tencent Video broadcast an animated adaptation of the novel,^[7] which can be viewed on Crunchyroll.

The novel is set on Earth in an alternate 2015, after a mutated virus called "RR" caused a global pandemic. The global population has dropped to about 5 billion. The remaining people managed to survive by producing antibodies that made them physically stronger. Various other animals underwent the same process of producing these antibodies. This led to fierce competition for resources between evolved humans and evolved animals.

The protagonist Luo Feng is on a historical mission, and first appears in the Fire Hammer Brigade. He then fights in the Iron Dragon War, passes the rigorous selection of the Elite Training Camp and withstands the test of the "No. 9 Ruin of Ancient Civilization". After experiencing various hardships, Luo Feng eventually becomes the Lord of the Earth and saves mankind.^[8]

The background of the work is set on Earth after the end of the world. Thirty years before the anime is set, a virus called the RR virus had broken out on Earth. Swallowed Starry Sky was officially launched on the Chinese website Qidian on July 21, 2010. Since the serialization of the novel, it has been active on the front of the monthly ticket list, collection list, and book review activity list of Qidian, and has been recommended on the hot cover many times. As of December 2011, Swallowed Starry Sky has accumulated more than 58 million hits, and has been at the top of Baidu's novel search rankings.^[15] At the same time, due to the "upgrade and change map" system architecture created by the author, it has been an influential part of a larger trend of online fantasy novels and immortal cultivation novels tending to have rigorous structures and ups and downs in the plot, resulting in a number of "novelty novels" that focus on upgrading and changing maps.^[16]
