Muhammad IV[a] (Muḥammad bin Kade[2]) was the mai of the Kanem–Bornu Empire in 1451–1456,[2] ruling during a century-long chaotic period of internal and external conflict.

Life

Muhammad was a son of mai Kade III[3] (r. 1440–1444).[2] Kade was defeated and killed by a rival in 1444, and was followed as mai by the briefly reigning mais Bir IV, Dunama V Ahmad, Muhammad III, and Amarma before Muhammad IV came to power in 1451.[2] Muhammad was a "cruel and sanguinary prince" and also had a short reign,[4] being succeeded by Gaji in 1456.[2]

Notes

  1. ^ Some chronologies of Kanem–Bornu rulers omit the 14th-century Muhammad II, lowering the regnal numbers of later rulers of this name. This ruler is then considered Muhammad III.[1]
