The Federal University of Technology Akure (also known as FUT Akure or simply FUTA), is a federal government-owned university located in Akure, Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria. It was established in 1981 by the Federal Government of Nigeria.[1]
Ranking
The Federal University of Technology Akure was ranked the sixth-best university in Nigeria by Webometrics in January 2020.[2] In 2022, it was ranked the fifth-best university in Nigeria by Times Higher Education World University Rankings.[3] FUTA was ranked third in the 2024 Scientific Index Ranking of Universities in Nigeria,[1] seventh in the Webometrics Ranking,[4] and third in the Times Higher ranking of Nigerian Universities.[5] In 2025, it was ranked eleventh in Nigeria and 3,099th in the global ranking.[6]

School of Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEMS) with departments including Applied geophysics, Marine science and technology, Meteorological and Climate Science, Applied Geophysics and Remote Sensing, and Geoinformatics Sciences. [8]
The school runs pre-degree science programs, short-term courses and University Advanced Basic Science programs.[13]
Library

Among the notable structures in the university is the central library, Albert Ilemobade library[14], located beside the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology. Students are required to complete their library registration in their first year of admission to ensure access.[15]
The library is named after Professor Albert Ilemobade, who was the second Vice-Chancellor of the university. It was established in 1982 based on the vision of the founders of the institution to enhance the learning of its students. It started in the Old Library complex located at Oba Kekere (mini campus). By April 2006, it was moved to its permanent two-story building, which covers a floor space area of 1,614.74 m2 and can sit 2,500 readers at a time.[16]
It is open to senior staff, students of the institution, and alumni of the university. The library also admits outside learners with valid reasons and a letter of introduction from a recognized university official (i.e., dean of a faculty, head of department from the visitor's school or director of an organization).[17][18]
Student Radio
The university operates a radio station, FUTA Radio[19][20] (93.1MHz), on campus. Programmes include a morning news bulletin, a talk show on education, a music program, a special segment highlighting achievements and success stories of students, faculty, and alumni, and a podcast on social issues.[19]
Student Organizations and Clubs
The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) offers a wide range of student organizations and clubs that cater to diverse interests, hobbies, and academic pursuits. These include the Student Union Government (SUG), Professional and Academic Societies, Cultural and Arts Clubs, and Cultural and Drama Society. The FUTASU serves as a platform for students to express their concerns, advocate for their rights, and engage in decision-making processes. The FUTASU works with the university management to improve the quality of education and student welfare. The FUTASU Executives includes the President, Vice president, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, Financial Secretary, Public Relations Officer, Treasurer, Welfare director, Director of Sports and Director of Socials. The union consists of all matriculated students in the university. The institution has over 200 registered clubs and student organizations which include, but are not limited to, social and community service clubs, Space Club, sports clubs, entrepreneurial and innovation clubs, hobby and special interest clubs, and student organizations and clubs to enhance the student experience, foster personal growth, and promote a sense of belonging within the university community.[21][22]
