Ajman University (Arabic: جامعة عجمان) was established on 17 June 1988 as the first private university in the Gulf Cooperation Council. It was the first university in the United Arab Emirates to admit expatriate students under the institutional name "Ajman University College of Science and Technology," which was subsequently renamed "Ajman University of Science and Technology". In 2018, it was again renamed to "Ajman University".^[1]

Ajman University is located in the Al Jurf area, close to Khalifa Hospital in Ajman. It is a comprehensive, traditional university offering a wide range of academic disciplines, including a fully accredited College of Medicine and College of Law. The 215,000 square meter (2.3 million square feet) campus has sports facilities (football, basketball, track and field, swimming), a gymnasium, a bookstore, health unit, restaurants, and mosques. Its standard academic year is divided into the fall (August) and spring (January) semesters; it also has one summer semester (June).

Ajman university was ranked among the top 30 universities (#17) in the Arab world,^[2] and is ranked #6 in the UAE according to the 2026 QS University rankings.^[3]

Ajman University is accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA), the UAE Federal Government's quality assurance agency for higher education.

On 20 December 2023, H.H. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman, issued Emiri Decree No. 14 of 2023, officially converting Ajman University from a for-profit entity into a non-profit institution.^[4]

Under the decree:

• The university gained legal personality and administrative/financial independence.
• It is now owned by the Government of Ajman, no longer subject to prior government HR and fiscal systems.

The decree specifies institutional objectives: enhancing academic and research excellence, promoting innovation and entrepreneurship, expanding access to education globally, and supporting economic development. ^[5]

Ajman University has experienced consistent growth in regional and global university rankings over recent years, particularly in areas such as internationalization, subject excellence, and sustainable development goals.

In the QS World University Rankings 2026, Ajman University was ranked #440 globally, climbing 37 places from the previous year. It is currently ranked #6 in the United Arab Emirates and continues to lead the nation

in international student ratio, with 81% of its student body composed of international students. The university also scored highly in employer reputation and international faculty indicators.

Ajman University has also achieved notable success in the QS Subject Rankings 2025:

• Ranked #1 in the UAE and top 51–100 globally for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence
• Ranked #1 in the UAE and top 151–200 globally for Pharmacy and Pharmacology
• Ranked #2 in the UAE and 201–250 globally in Computer Science and Mathematics
• Improved its global ranking in Social Sciences and Management to #284, up from the 451–500 band in the previous year

Ajman University was listed in the 301–400 global band of the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2025, which assess universities based on their contributions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The university ranked #1 in the UAE for SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), highlighting its strong commitment to health, education, and global collaboration.

In THE subject-specific rankings for 2025:

• AU was ranked #88 globally in Education Studies, and #1 in the UAE in the same field
• It was placed within the 301–400 range globally in Medical and Health Sciences, Engineering, and Computer Science, where it also holds top-tier rankings nationally
